WORT Youth Radio

WORT Youth Radio WORT Youth Radio is youth driven content aimed to inform, engage, and promote discourse among other young people on various political topics. Spread the word!

Political education and broadcast seems to function under the assumption that youth are entirely disengaged while under the age of 18 and learn to become political only in their college years. There are very few outlets for youth to express and engage in political discussion. Most news streaming comes from online resources and social media, serving as an entry point to bigger political issues. How

ever, many sources do not connect with youth or give them the opportunity to speak about issues without being patronized. WORT Youth Radio’s goal is to create youth driven content to inform, engage, and promote discourse among other young people on various political topics. The 30-minute show will be broken into a 7-10/18-20 minute split between a pre-recorded introduction briefly summarizing the topic, featuring sound bites of youth opinion and a longer interview with a credible but non-patronizing expert. The expert will be expected to address youth respectfully without condescension. Youth are encouraged to pose questions before and after the show regarding the topic or the expert specifically. Today we interviewed Dr. Kei Kawashima-Ginsberg of CIRCLE, the center for information & research on civic learning and engagement. This interview will be featured in our pilot episode on youth participation in politics.

However, to complete the first episode, we still need short interviews with students!

Generally, we’re discussing why youth should have means of political engagement such as radio.

If you’re at West, message Amanda Zhang or Abi Bethke to set up a quick interview at lunch by September 9th

If you’re not at West and you’re interested in collecting voice clips at your school, we’d love to have your help. Message Amanda Zhang for more details on how you should do that.
