I regret to inform you that summer gardening has been officially canceled. I killed a snake in my planter container and I’m still recovering emotionally. Check your containers before you water.

A little update after performing surgery on my zucchini that got attacked by the squash vine borer.

First I removed the larvae from inside the stem, added worm castings for extra nutrients and hilled up the soil to cover the wound.

And 24 hours later it’s still green and standing! This tells me that there is still nutrients and water getting through to the end of the plant. Stay tuned for further updates and if my method works.

I’m so thankful I have a long growing season here in my garden zone!

So today I’m starting more seeds so I can harvest all season long!

Growing vertically is one of the easiest ways to get more from your garden without expanding your growing space. Whether you’re growing cucumbers, pole beans, tomatoes, peas, or squash, a trellis can help improve airflow, keep produce cleaner, and make harvesting much easier. 🌱

What crops are you growing vertically this season?

It was such a sad morning to come out to my garden and finding several of my zucchini plants attacked by squash vine borers. On two of the vines I was able to identify the larvae and remove them 🙌🏻

But, I’m not giving up!! The leaves and vine above the damage is green and looking lively so I’m hopeful I can save it.

I harvested worm castings from my own worm compost bin and brought them directly to the soil around my plant and vine. This helps to add nutrients to the soil that will feed my plant and hopefully give it a boost.

Then I hilled up the dirt over the wound in hopes that the vine will re-root and continue to grow and thrive.

Have you ever had to save a squash plant?

Apparently laying your first egg requires notifying the entire neighborhood. 🐔🥚

The dreaded squash vine borer struck my spaghetti squash.

I couldn’t find the larvae, but the vine is still alive and has a squash growing on the end, so I’m trying to get it to root at new nodes with a little help from my worm castings. Now we wait and see.

Tomatoes are doing a lot more behind the scenes than most people realize.
