Throwback Thursday: Summer in Putnam before WiFi. ☀️

Rowboats, campsites, bandstands, lake strolls, postcards, and outdoor hangs from the late 1800s and early 1900s.

With summer officially arriving last Sunday, we’re using this Throwback Thursday to look back at how generations of residents and visitors enjoyed warm-weather life across Putnam County, from boating on Lake Mahopac and Lake Oscawana to camping at Peach Lake, strolling through village centers, gathering for music outdoors, and sending the original “summer photo dump” by postcard.

Some of these images also show how closely connected Putnam communities were with neighboring hubs like Peekskill, especially when trains, river travel, hotels, boarding houses, and summer tourism helped bring visitors into the area. Lake Oscawana, for example, has long been part of Putnam Valley, but old postcards and travel routes often connected it with Peekskill.

And while the outfits, boats, and postcards have changed, the summer spirit is still here.

In the latest edition of The Putnam County Press/Times, you’ll find plenty of ways to enjoy the season now, including local summer music series, outdoor concerts, movies in the park, Free Fishing Days, fireworks, art, community events, and more.

So now we want to know:

What do you love most about summer in Putnam County?

This Father’s Day, Putnam County is celebrating one of its own—a local dad who just brought his remarkable life story to the big screen. 🎬

A little over a week ago, the documentary Whipple’s World premiered at the 25th annual Tribeca Festival, and for once longtime NY1 anchor George Whipple was the one in the spotlight instead of holding the mic. Walking the red carpet right beside him: his daughter, Elizabeth, and his mother, Joe Ann Feeley Whipple—three generations, one very proud night.

Directed by Adam Paul Verity and produced by Robin Sanders and Cody Williams, the film is an endearing look behind the scenes of a quintessential New York life—fittingly premiering at the festival De Niro and Rosenthal founded to bring people back downtown after 9/11.

Farmer, philanthropist, lawyer, TV host, historian, castle restorer—the film captures every facet of George Whipple. But the heart of it is Putnam. It follows him home to the county where his family has farmed for three generations: running for Kent town supervisor at 14, dropping Elizabeth at the Garrison School, and a lifetime of preservation through Preserve Putnam—the Whipple-Feeley Chapel honoring local veterans, Spain Cornerstone Park, and Tilly Foster Farm. As an official Putnam County Ambassador and co-founder of the Revolutionary Putnam County 250 Fund, he’s now helping lead the county into America’s 250th year.

He may have a dozen titles, but this Father’s Day we’re celebrating his most important one: Dad. 🤍

Wishing a Happy Father’s Day to all the Putnam dads making everyday memories with the ones they love.

A beautiful Juneteenth celebration in Putnam County. ❤️💚🖤

Yesterday, the community gathered at Arts on the Lake for the 4th Annual Juneteenth Putnam County celebration, presented by Black Heritage Events Putnam County and led by Linda Paris, founder of Putnam County’s Black Heritage Experience.

The afternoon brought together music, dance, vendors, local organizations, elected officials, families and neighbors in honor of freedom, history and community.

Pictured above: Just The Place, Inc. dancers passionately performing a fusion of praise, hip-hop, contemporary, and jazz movement choreographed by Sharon Simmons-Wright.

The celebration also connected Juneteenth to Putnam County’s own local history. Putnam County Historian Jennifer Cassidy shared more about Anthony “Tone” Waring, a Black Revolutionary War veteran whose story is tied to Tone’s Pond, now known as Lake Tonetta, in Southeast.

Local organizations and groups participated with informational tables and as vendors, including Putnam's Progressives, PutnamNYPride 🌈, Putnam County DOH, among others.

Here in Putnam County, the day was a reminder that history is not far away. It lives in our communities, our landmarks, our stories and the people working to make sure those stories are remembered.

Putnam County is coming together to celebrate Juneteenth this Friday, June 19, from 2–7 PM at Arts on the Lake in the Kent Lakes / Lake Carmel area.

The 4th Annual Juneteenth Celebration will feature an afternoon of community, culture, hidden history, music, dance, exhibits, vendors, and solidarity.

Featured participants include Robert A. Buccheri, Joshua 2, Baba Kazi Oliver, DJ Frank Boogie, VJ George, Brittany Carrasco, Da Brand Dance Crew, Just The Place Dance Academy, and an exhibit on Unsung Black Revolutionary War Heroes, with vendors and more.

What is Juneteenth?

Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, were informed of their freedom more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

Today, Juneteenth honors Black freedom, resilience, history, culture, joy, and the ongoing work of justice.

Also happening in Putnam County: Philipstown Depot Theatre’s special Juneteenth reading of MAGGIE’S FARM, written by Goldee B. Greene and directed/narrated by Fran DiSarro, is sold out.

Is Ketchup on Bratwurst a Sin? Putnam County Weighs In

German Fest at the German American Social Club of Peekskill in Putnam Valley | May 30–31, 2026

Proof Putnam has the best people, German Fest edition. 🇩🇪🌭

A few weeks ago, the German American Social Club of Peekskill brought the community together in Putnam Valley for German Fest, and it was everything we love about local coverage: food, music, tradition, laughs, and highly serious bratwurst opinions.

For this “Proof Putnam Has the Best People” edition, we caught up with festival organizer and club president Gerald “Gerry” Schamrek, Putnam County Executive Kevin Byrne, and festivalgoers for a word-on-the-street style debate on one of the most urgent cultural questions of our time:

Ketchup on bratwurst: harmless condiment or absolute sin?

Stay tuned for more local coverage from Putnam Press & Times.
