No spinnaker? No problem. Gary Jobson, Will Crump and Marie Crump jumped into a borrowed J/Boats, Newport, RI J/7 for the Helly Hansen Sailing World Regatta Series PHRF Distance Race action in Annapolis. As the fleet's only non-spin boats, chasing the bigger boats with kites took a different approach. Gary takes it from here...

An experienced trio jumped onboard a borrowed J/7 for the first time and—without a spinnaker—gave a good chase to the big boats.

Many a Ted Turner story will be shared following news of his passing today. Mine is from a past 12 Meter North American Championship, as the starboard trimmer onboard the chartered American Eagle. It was the final day, racing in a blustery northwest wind at the top of Narragansett Bay. After rounding the weather mark, Turner, hands at 2 and 10 o'clock on the big wheel, was demanding that we jibe. The boat's owner refused. Turner argued and then shouted, "I wanna' jibe, God damn it!" Then he did so. The big Dacron main came sweeping across at full speed and landed with loud thud that shook rig. A collective silence came across the boat as everyone stared aloft waiting to see what happened next. Noting. Except sighs of relief, a race win and another trophy for Turner who was whisked away after the race, on a tender with a lady in waiting. Gary Jobson, who knows him best, shares an in-depth obituary with us. Sail on, Mr. Turner, and keep it outrageous.
