Kate Blystone was confirmed as the Planning Director for the County of Maui by the Maui County Council on Wednesday.

Blystone has more than 20 years of experience as a land planner and community engagement professional in the public, private, nonprofit and education planning sectors.

“Our community will benefit from Kate’s experience and her collaborative approach to planning,” said Mayor Richard Bissen, who appointed her to the position in January. “We appreciate her enthusiasm and willingness to step into this important position during this challenging time and appreciate the Council support in her confirmation.”

Blystone most recently served as a program officer with Hawai‘i Community Foundation’s House Maui Initiative program. Prior to her time with HCF, Blystone served as a Senior Planner V with the County of Maui for four years. In addition, Blystone has worked as a project manager for Bowers + Kubota Consulting, an outreach manager for the Pipeline Safety Trust, a program director for RE Sources of Sustainable Communities and as a lecturer in Urban Planning at Western Washington University.

In 2012 she completed a Master of Urban & Regional Planning degree at Eastern Washington University with an emphasis in small town planning. In 2006, she earned a Bachelor of Arts with a minor in Environmental Studies from Western Washington University.

I'm all for the safety and well-being of our elected officials, but it's essential that we maintain open lines of communication with those who represent us. With the recent devastating wildfires and the reopening of the west side of Maui, it's more crucial than ever that we can engage with our mayor and make our voices heard.

“It’s really an eviction storm,” he said. “It’s the worst of the worst, because it puts everyone in crisis.”

A 45-day notice sent to a renter on a month-to-month lease isn’t technically an eviction. And tenants do have some recourse.

They can look online to see if their landlord has listed their unit for rent, which would indicate the property owner isn’t really using it for a family member, Lloyd said. In that case, the tenant could write a letter contesting the notice to vacate.

To unify the islands in support for Maui, the vigil will center on emotional and spiritual healing that is rooted in traditional Native Hawaiian practices and include leaders from diverse faiths.
