A Year of Grief, A Lifetime of Resolve
Today, my heart is heavy with memories. One year ago, Malibu lost four bright lights – Niamh, Peyton, Alsha, and Deslyn – in a senseless tragedy that shook our community. Their lives were cut short by a reckless driver, a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of fighting for change.
Their loss reignited a fire within me that has fueled my work for safer roads for nearly 15 years. In 2010, our daughter Emily was taken from us far too soon. Her memory gave birth to the Emily Shane Foundation, a testament to the power of love to transform grief into action.
This past year, we've made progress. Speed cameras now monitor PCH, and plans for a safer roadway are in motion. But progress is not enough when lives are still being lost. We owe it to Niam, Asha, Peyton, Deslyn, and Emily to do more and better.
That's why the Emily Shane Foundation (emilyshane.org) is hosting a Community, Awareness, and Action Day this Sunday in partnership with Pepperdine University. We'll gather to honor the memories of those lost, educate our community, and demand change. I invite you to join us and voice our call for action.
But we need your help to make this event a success. Please support our 100 for 100 campaign ( https://www.zeffy.com/en-US/ticketing/d12ea4dd-acad-40ea-802e-ad1b287208bf) and help us empower the next generation to value life and safety. Together, we can create a PCH where ghost bikes are a relic of the past, not a constant reminder of tragedy.
For a deeper look at the impact of these losses, the progress we've made, and the work still ahead, I invite you to read my column https://malibutimes.com/driving-change-you-live-as-long-as-the-last-person-remembers-you. Let's make a difference together.

Join us this Sunday at Pepperdine's Alumni Park from 11:30-2:30.

Governor Newsom signs legislation adding speed cameras to a dangerous section of the Pacific Coast Highway
What you need to know: Governor Newsom signed a bill allowing Malibu to add up to 5 speed cameras along a dangerous stretch of the iconic Pacific Coast Highway. The Governor also signed two other transportation measures.
SACRAMENTO – Governor Gavin Newsom today announced he signed legislation to enhance safety measures along a dangerous stretch of the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) in Malibu that has claimed over 60 lives since 2010. The legislation builds on existing state efforts aiming to save lives on this section of the PCH.

The Governor signed SB 1297 by Senator Ben Allen (D-Santa Monica), which allows Malibu to install up to five automated speed enforcement cameras to reduce speeding, particularly in high-risk areas like school zones. The pilot program focuses on promoting traffic safety by automatically detecting vehicles exceeding speed limits and issuing fines. The law requires that clear signage be posted to notify drivers of the system, and a public education campaign will be conducted before enforcement begins. Additionally, the system will prioritize geographic and socioeconomic diversity in its deployment.

“Over 60 lives lost on one stretch of our iconic Pacific Coast Highway is unacceptable — it’s a call to action. That’s why we’re adding speed cameras to help put an end to reckless driving in Malibu. These new cameras will build on the state's ongoing safety makeover that includes infrastructure upgrades, increased traffic enforcement, and a new public education campaign.”

By Michel Shane Malibu, a California beach town with just 10,000 residents, ranks among the top 25 cities in the United States for per capita road fatalities. This fact is not just shocking but outrageous.  The tolerance of such carnage on its roads by a town with such resources in a nation as weal...

In my latest article, I said there must be more than good intentions to make our roads safer. We're drowning in good intentions but starving for real coordination and action. It's time to unite all the campaigns and initiatives, develop a clear message and a long-term action plan, and focus on data-driven solutions. Let's work together to make Pacific Coast Highway the safe, thriving artery it should be. Malibu has the opportunity to be a model for road safety. Let's seize it.

By Michel Shane  Columnist  The Pacific Coast Highway winds through Malibu, a stunning ribbon of asphalt with the ocean on one side and cliffs on the other. But PCH, as locals call it, is a road of sorrow as much as beauty. It’s taken too many young lives, leaving behind only haunting memories a...

My most recent article is a wake-up call for our community. The PCH situation is severe, and we can't afford to keep waiting for change. Every day we waste is a day closer to the next tragedy. We owe it to ourselves, our children, and the memory of those lost to demand better. The story of Haylynn Conrad, a local mom running for City Council, shows what's possible when someone decides to be part of the solution. But we need a whole community ready to take action. So, I'm asking you - what will YOU do? Read the full article, and let's talk in the comments - how can we work together to create a safer future?

By Michel Shane Sharing my views publicly has been enlightening. These early weeks have been thought-provoking. I’m living proof that we can drive change by highlighting important issues. But I’m just one person — we need collective action. It’s not just about awareness; it’s about activel...
