August always feels like the Sunday evening of the entire year…
I know I’m not alone on this one, so come on over and hear me out…
Wasn’t it just MAY? School got out late, we were making summer bucket lists, planning family trips, sleeping in a little longer, and convincing ourselves we had all the time in the world.
Then…
You blink.
And somehow you’re staring at the countdown until the first day of school.
Now, now, now… I know there are two kinds of mamas.
The ones saying, “Thank you, sweet little baby Jesus… they’re finally going back to school!” 😂
And then there are mamas like me…
The ones whispering a little prayer while holding on for dear life.
“Lord, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.”
AM I RIGHT?! 😅
Because back-to-school season is a fu**in TRIP.
Almost overnight, our brains stop being brains and turn into built-in family calendars.
We’re remembering PT appointments.
Who’s wearing what.
Who needs gym shoes.
Who outgrew last year’s X,Y,Z.
What papers need signed, and sent back.
Have all the school fees been paid?
Who’s staying after school?
Who’s going to what activity after school and where at?
Who’s got homework?
Laundry.
Lunches.
Baths.
Bedtimes.
Hair.
…and the famous question…
“What’s for dinner?”
And somewhere in the middle of all that…
We’re supposed to remember Mom.
Us.
Ourselves.
To make time for her too.
Mama… if you’ve been feeling overwhelmed, anxious, emotional, or like you’re already behind before school has even started…
That feeling is valid.
You aren’t failing.
You’re just trying to do it all…
ALL.
THE.
TIME.
I saw a quote the other day and whether it resonates with you or not, it absolutely stopped me in my tracks: this one HIT!
“My love language is acts of service, but my trauma response is to do everything myself so nobody can let me down.”
Oooof. 😮💨
That one hit.
Because moms carry an invisible load that nobody really sees. That none of us really speak about.
Most of the time, our husbands don’t even realize the mental checklist constantly running through our heads… and honestly, it’s because we’ve gotten so good at carrying it with grace, a smile, and maybe a little dry shampoo. 🤭
So if you’re standing in your kitchen this week staring at a calendar that’s suddenly overflowing…
And wondering how it’s all going to work, mentally, emotionally, financially,……
Take a deep breath.
You don’t have to have it all figured out today, or tomorrow.
The routines will come.
The kids will settle in, most likely better and quicker than us. 🤪
You’ll find your rhythm again… Your mama circus act, aka balancing act.
Just like you always do.
And in the middle of taking care of everyone else…
Don’t forget to give yourself the same grace you so freely give everyone else.
Oh… and husbands…
If you’re reading this, consider this your friendly reminder, hell maybe even WARNING 🆘
An extra hug.
A “I LOVE YOU”
A “thank you.”
An “I appreciate you.”
A “You’re doing an amazing job.”
A “ I see you”
A “ I Noticed how much you are doing.”
A “You’re beautiful babe.”
A”what can i help you with?” EVEN THOUGH we will most likely tell you nothing and keep on keeping on 🤣
Trust me… it’ll go a whole lot further than asking, “What’s for dinner?” 🤪😂
Husbands everywhere……… YOU’RE WELCOME…. 😘
XO,
Jess 💕
