Just in on the CTP News Desk:

CMS just finalized its 2026 Skin Substitute LCDs — and Dr. Jeffrey Lehrman shares that the updates will matter.

What’s new?
✔️ A three-tiered product categorization
✔️ Clear delineation of covered vs. non-covered skin substitutes
✔️ Discretionary coverage left in the hands of MACs for another category

But what does this really mean for your day-to-day practice, reimbursement patterns, and patient care decisions?

Spoiler alert: The final LCDs reaffirm reimbursement rates, but the real story is how product coverage decisions could shift — depending on where you practice and the MAC interpreting “reasonable and necessary.”

Breaking News from CMS!

Today, December 15, 2025, CMS released an announcement that the MACs will issue updated LCDs for skin substitute grafts/CTPs that will take effect January 1, 2026, governing coverage for diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) and venous leg ulcers (VLUs).

These updates will categorize products by evidence levels into covered, non-covered, and a 12-month “status quo” group.

Review of submitted clinical evidence will inform early-2027 LCD reconsideration; discretion remains for MACs to adjudicate claims.

How will the 2026 CMS reimbursement changes reshape wound care? One clinician shared his perspective with the CTP News Desk.

In a new Q&A, Dr. Kazu Suzuki offers a candid look at why many clinicians are already scaling back their use of cellular and tissue-based products (CTPs)—and what the future of advanced therapies may look like.

A few standout themes:
• Runaway cost escalation: CMS spending on CTPs jumped from $250M in 2019 to over $10B in 2024.
• Market correction ahead: Flat per-cm² payment rates may force a shift back to “proven” products supported by stronger RCTs.
• Calls for accountability: Dr. Suzuki emphasizes that fraud and abuse have distorted both costs and clinical expectations in the field.
• Return to fundamentals: He highlights that most wounds healed with solid clinical practice long before high-priced CTPs existed.

If you’re navigating product selection, formulary shifts, or reimbursement strategy for 2026, this interview is worth a read.
