The other day I was asked what was the best way to get your foot in the door to railroading.
My answer was and always has been find a local railroad museum or organization that offers volunteer positions in all aspects of the industry. From Track and transportation to Mechanical. It is the best way to become fluent in the operation and basic knowledge and practices of railroading. Organizations like this are the public relations lifeline between the general public and the modern railroad industry.
My first start to my career was volunteering from an early age at my local railroad museum, where i eventually became the 3rd employee hired and spent 10 years in full time employment. This was before moving out of state for another railroad opportunity. Building on the already abundant skillset learned from time spent keeping the museum running. But this little railroad still just as charming and wonderful, was my start into the journey. Best part was they needed my help as much as I needed the knowledge and experience they had to offer.
I can assure you that you can find a group like this in almost every state across this great nation. A quick google search will usually yield some useful results.
