I miss Lizzie. What a wonderful companion she was! If there was ever an irreplaceable friend, it was Lizzie. But I was actively looking for another within a week of losing her to cancer. At first, it felt like I was disrespecting Lizzie, which was silly, but then I began to think about all the dogs in shelters who just want to and deserve to be loved. So, once again in my lifetime, I found myself in a position to provide that love - and more. Can you say instant motivation? A few days later, God answered my prayers, and Gracie was emptying out Lizzie's toy box, repositioning them in the yard for easier access. (I suppose, anyway. She DID play with all of them.) A year later, 999-year-old Blackie popped up on FB. He wasn't getting any adoption attention then, and now, the 1,000-year-old black Lab has a home and will be loved for the rest of his life. He shows his appreciation and love every day. Lizzie wasn't replaced, and her death at least had some meaning. It allowed me to save Gracie and ensure she experiences love for the rest of her days. Both she and Blackie, and even Miss Kitty, never fail to express their love and I believe, their appreciation for me daily. That exchange of love becomes a source of warmth and positivity that hangs around the house. The point? Remember those dogs in the shelter, and your chance to rescue one can be the break they so badly want. Go ahead, give them a loving home; you will add meaning to the loss of an old friend, and re-establish that love-filled, positive environment in your home.
