🎤 HipCo’s True Fathers: Mighty Blow & Takun J —The Legacy We Can’t Ignore 🇱🇷
HipCo is more than just a genre, it’s the heartbeat of Liberia’s streets, the voice of its people, and a cultural movement born from struggle and resilience. We all know the big names and the latest hits, but there are legends whose stories rarely get told the way they deserve. Today, I want to talk about two of those giants: Mighty Blow and Takun J.
Back in the days before social media, before streaming platforms and instant viral fame, Mighty Blow was already shaping what would become HipCo. His music wasn’t just entertainment, it was real life in Colloqua. Tracks like “Old Fire Chunk”, his greatest hit along with “Strange Food”, “WWP”, “Breaking Heart”, and “New Love” captured the raw emotions, struggles, and stories of everyday Liberians. Without the digital tools we rely on today, Mighty Blow’s music spread through word of mouth, street performances, and radio airplay. He wasn’t following a trend, he created a movement. And yet, the industry has largely failed to recognize his pivotal role.
Then there’s Takun J, who took that foundation and used it to push HipCo beyond music, turning it into a powerful tool for social change. With hard-hitting tracks like “They Lie To Us,” “Police Man,” and “Gbagba is Corruption,” Takun J gave voice to injustice and spoke truth to power. He made HipCo impossible to ignore.
These two aren’t just musicians; they are cultural architects. Mighty Blow laid the groundwork with his pioneering sound. Takun J armed that sound with courage and purpose. Together, they shaped the HipCo we know today.
As Liberians, it’s time to celebrate their contributions openly and proudly. Let’s stop rewriting our music history to fit the moment and start honoring those who built the foundation, when no one was watching, and the industry wasn’t paying attention.
They deserve more than a passing mention. They deserve respect, recognition, and flowers while they can still see it.
