El Septeto Santiaguero

Founded: 1995 in Santiago de Cuba. 

-Leader: Dewar (tres player) has been the artistic director since its inception. 

-The group emerged from an earlier band Melodías de Ayer. Young musicians from other septets (such as Sones de Oriente and Septeto Luz) joined around 1993-1994, helping shape what would become Septeto Santiaguero.

-They play traditional Cuban son (and related forms like guaracha, bolero, guajira, guaguancó), aiming to preserve the classic septet format: guitar, tres, bongo, clave, maracas, acoustic bass, trumpet, plus in some performances the tumbadora/drum as a nod to Arsenio Rodríguez. 

-Even though they are often eight musicians, they kept the name “septeto” because the repertoire and instrumentation largely follow the septet tradition. 

-Their approach is both reverent to tradition and vibrant: while they draw from older son styles, they engage younger audiences, perform energetically, and do tributes to classic Cuban music.

-They won their first Latin Grammy in 2015 in the Best Traditional Tropical Album category with No Quiero Llanto. Tributo a Los Compadres. 

-They won again in 2018 with A Mi Qué. Tributo a los clásicos cubanos in the same category.
