Kuo: Only iPhone 15 Pro Models Will Support Higher-Speed Data Transfers With USB-C Upgrade
The iPhone 15 Pro models that are planned for next year will support higher wired transfer speeds thanks to the transition to USB-C, according to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.While all ‌iPhone 15‌ models are going to feature USB-C ports instead of Lightning ports, the faster transfer speeds will be limited to the ‌iPhone 15‌ Pro models. Standard ‌iPhone 15‌ models will continue to feature USB 2.0 speeds, the same as Lightning.(5/7)My latest survey indicates all 2H23 new iPhones will abandon Lightning and change to USB-C, but only two high-end models (15 Pro & 15 Pro Max) will support the wired high-speed transtfer, and the two standard ones (15 & 15 15 Plus) still support USB 2.0 same as Lightning.— 郭明錤 (Ming-Chi Kuo) () November 17, 2022Kuo says that transfer speeds will likely "improve markedly" on the ‌iPhone 15‌ Pro models, with support for "at least" USB 3.2 or Thunderbolt 3. With the upgrade, ‌iPhone 15‌ Pro models will be able to transfer video files and other file types at quicker speeds, with Kuo predicting a significantly improved user experience.USB 2.0 transfer speeds are limited to 480Mb/s, while USB 3.2 supports speeds up to 20Gb/s. Thunderbolt 3 supports data transfer speeds up to 40Gb/s, so if Kuo is correct, there will be a major difference in wired data transfer speeds between Pro and non-Pro ‌iPhone 15‌ models.Apple is transitioning to USB-C across its product lineup, and the first USB-C iPhones are due next year. Apple is making the change in order to comply with European regulations that require electronic devices to have non-proprietary, common charging methods. In a new interview with CBS Mornings, Apple CEO Tim Cook touched on a wide range of topics, including the iPhone 14's new Emergency SOS via Satellite feature, the future of Twitter, and what it means for the app on the App Store, and what's next for Cook after he steps down as CEO of the company.In a teaser for the interview earlier this week, Cook said Apple will be deliberate in its hiring amid economic uncertainty. "That means we're continuing to hire, but not everywhere in the company are we hiring," Cook said, amid reports the company has halted hirings. In the full interview, Cook talked about the ‌iPhone 14‌'s Emergency SOS via Satellite feature, which launched earlier this week to ‌iPhone 14‌ users in the United States and Canada.I'm a hiker, and so I'm frequently out in places where there is no service, and you don't want there to be polls out there either. But now, to have the ability to contact in the event of an emergency is huge. You know, if you go to National Parks, the national parks are largely not covered by cellular service, and so this happens to people all the time, and it feels so great to be able to talk to a satellite 100 of miles away traveling at fifteen thousand miles an hour.Cook also touched on Apple's stance on privacy, saying the company does not believe in "sucking that information [user data] up into the cloud to make decisions off of it." iPhone 14 Emergency SOS via Satellite Rolling Out Today to Customers in the U.S. and Canada
Apple has announced that the iPhone 14's Emergency SOS via Satellite service will officially start rolling out today, the company said in a press release.Apple announced the feature during the ‌iPhone 14‌'s event in September, saying it would officially launch to customers in November. To use the feature, users must be running iOS 16.1. At launch, Emergency SOS via Satellite will be available in the United States and Canada and will expand to additional countries in December. For the first two years, Emergency SOS via Satellite will be free for customers, so Apple may charge for the service in the future.With Emergency SOS via Satellite, in "ideal conditions with a direct view of the sky and the horizon," ‌iPhone 14‌ and iPhone 14 Pro models can send a message to emergency services using a satellite connection.
