Before the internet, before you could look up anything in seconds, there was the Wish Book. It showed up in the mail sometime in the fall, hundreds of pages thick, and it meant Christmas was coming.
You'd lie on the floor by the tree and go through it page by page. You circled everything. The bikes, the racetracks, the dolls, the games you'd never actually get. You knew you'd be lucky to find two of them under the tree, and somehow those two turned out to be the best things in the world.
The catalog is gone now. So is the store. But if you grew up with it, you can still feel the weight of it on your lap.
What did you circle in the Wish Book that you never got?
