Nora stared at the dark smartphone lying on the white porcelain plate.
It looked wrong there.
Cold. Silent. Waiting.
Its black case caught the light above the mahogany dining room table, while across from her, Victor stood frozen in his gray suit. The jacket pulled tight across his chest as he leaned forward, his face drained of all its polished confidence.
“Who are you calling?” he shouted.
His voice cracked.
Not like a man angry at a family dinner.

The people who had raised her.
Fed her.
Dressed her.
Comforted her.
And lied to her.
Victor’s chest rose and fell beneath his black tie. For the first time in Nora’s life, he did not look like the untouchable lawyer who could bend any room to his will.
He looked like something trapped.
Nora drew in a shaky breath.
Then she ignored Beatrice.
Without taking her eyes off Victor, she lifted the phone to her ear.
