Remembering Dr. Herbert Charles Smitherman Sr. ✨
Most people will never know his name.
Yet millions have benefited from his work every single day.
Dr. Herbert Charles Smitherman Sr. was a pioneering chemist, educator, mentor, and trailblazer whose contributions helped improve products found in homes across America. As the first African American hired by Procter & Gamble with a Ph.D., he entered a world where very few Black scientists were given the opportunity to succeed—and he refused to let that door close behind him.
Born in Birmingham, Alabama, during the era of segregation, Smitherman rose through determination, education, and brilliance to earn a doctorate in chemistry from Howard University. His work led to innovations in consumer products, including research connected to toothpaste technology that helped improve oral health for countless people.
But his greatest achievement may not have been the patents he earned.
It was the doors he opened.
Throughout his career, he worked tirelessly to recruit, mentor, and support young Black scientists and engineers. He helped create opportunities for future generations, ensuring that talented young people could see themselves in laboratories, classrooms, and leadership positions where they had long been underrepresented.
After retiring from industry, he continued serving others as a professor, school administrator, and advocate for science education. He understood that knowledge means little unless it is shared.
Dr. Herbert Smitherman’s story reminds us that history is not only made by those whose names appear on products, buildings, or headlines. Sometimes it is made by those whose dedication quietly improves lives, creates opportunities, and inspires generations to dream bigger.
His legacy lives on not only in scientific innovation but in every student, scientist, and leader who walked through the doors he helped open.
