Well… this page accidentally went on vacation. 😅

If you’ve been wondering where the weather guy disappeared to, don’t worry… I didn’t blow away in a thunderstorm. I’ve been putting some miles on the truck, spending time around the U.P., and soaking up summer.

Meanwhile, Mother Nature decided to behave herself for once. Convenient. 😂

I’m back at the helm now, and we’ve got plenty coming:

• Great Lakes and marine forecasts
• Storm tracking
• Sunrise and sunset photos
• Skywatching
• Random Yooper weather chaos

Ope… turns out running a weather page while working full-time might mean I need to hire an assistant. Applications are now open. Requirements include pointing at clouds, saying “She’s gettin’ dark over there,” and accepting payment in pasties and coffee.

🌑 New Moon Tonight Over the U.P. 🌑

Tonight is the New Moon, which means the moon won’t be lighting up the sky. That’s good news if you enjoy looking at the stars.

A few tips if you’re heading out tonight:

✨ Get away from town lights if possible
✨ Give your eyes 20 minutes to adjust to the darkness
✨ Put your phone away unless absolutely necessary
✨ Look south and overhead for the brightest view of the Milky Way

If skies clear as expected this evening, you could see thousands of stars, the Milky Way stretching across the sky, and even a few shooting stars if you’re patient.

🌑 New Moon Sunday Night 🌑

One of the things I love about living up here is how dark the night sky can get once you leave the town lights behind.

This Sunday brings a New Moon, which means the Moon will be nearly invisible as it passes between the Earth and the Sun. No bright moonlight washing out the sky. Just stars.

If the clouds cooperate after this weekend’s cooler, unsettled weather moves through, Sunday night could be a great opportunity to get outside and look up. Out in the woods, along the shoreline, or even sitting on the dock, you’ll have a better chance of spotting some of the fainter stars that usually get lost in the glow of the Moon.

As a captain, I’ve spent plenty of nights under the stars on the Great Lakes. Even with all the technology we have today, there’s still something special about looking up at a dark sky and realizing just how small we are.

So Sunday night, throw on a sweatshirt, grab a cup of coffee, and take a few minutes to enjoy one of the darkest skies we’ll see all month.

Morning, folks.

While we’re enjoying a pretty decent start to the day here in the UP, our neighbors down in Wisconsin are getting hammered by a line of strong thunderstorms packing wind gusts up to 50 mph, small hail, frequent lightning, and some very heavy rain.

Now before everyone starts buying bread and milk, this line still has to cross Lake Michigan and work its way north. The lakes have a habit of taking the edge off these systems this time of year, but that doesn’t mean we get a free pass.

If these storms can hold together, areas along the southern UP could see some gusty winds, lightning, brief downpours, and maybe even a little hail later today. The biggest thing I’ll be watching is whether this line can survive the trip north without falling apart.

As always on the Great Lakes, the weather gets a vote. What looks impressive this morning can weaken fast, and what looks harmless can surprise you.

I’ll keep an eye on the radar and let you know if anything changes.

Well folks, if you’re still awake, Mother Nature put on a pretty good show tonight.

A line of thunderstorms rolled across eastern Wisconsin and the Door Peninsula this evening, lighting up the radar with plenty of lightning, heavy rain, and some impressive storm structure. From here in the U.P., we mostly got to watch the show from a distance.

As a captain, I’ve learned that sometimes the weather that gets your attention isn’t the weather over your head. It’s the weather just over the horizon.

Good morning from the Lake Michigan shoreline!

A bit of a cool start to the day here in Manistique with temperatures sitting around 49° and a light east-southeast breeze coming off the lake. The radar is quiet this morning, and if you’re already out and about, you’ve probably noticed the same thing I did: not a cloud in the sky.

This is one of those mornings that reminds me why we live here.

The beach is nearly empty, the water is calm, and the sunrise over Lake Michigan is putting on a pretty good show. Days like today are easy to take for granted when you see them all the time, but they’re part of what makes the Upper Peninsula special.

We’ll warm into the low 60s this afternoon under plenty of sunshine. Not exactly beach weather yet, but a beautiful day to get outside, get some work done, hit the golf course, launch the boat, or just enjoy being in the U.P.

Good morning!

It’s a cool start across the U.P. with temperatures sitting in the upper 40s and low 50s, but don’t let that fool you. Once the sun gets some work done, most inland locations should climb into the low 70s this afternoon.

The real story continues to be the lakes.

Nearshore Lake Michigan temperatures around Manistique are still running near 50°F, and Lake Superior remains downright cold. That’s a lot of cold water sitting around us heading into June, and it’s one of the reasons I’m still not convinced we’re looking at a consistently hot summer.

If you’re near the shoreline today, expect it to feel cooler than locations farther inland. If you’re headed out on the water, remember the air may feel comfortable, but the water certainly isn’t.

Otherwise, enjoy it. Sunshine, light winds, and about as nice of a late-May day as you could ask for.

UP TICK WATCH 🕷️🌲

If you’ve spent any time outside lately in the Upper Peninsula, you’ve probably already noticed it… ticks are BAD this year.

Between the mild winter, damp spring, and warming temps, conditions have been almost perfect for them. Unfortunately, Lyme disease carrying deer ticks are now well established across much of Michigan, including parts of the UP.

Whether you’re:
• laying in the sun along Lake Michigan
• walking the dogs
• scouting trails
• fishing the Two Hearted
• working in the woods
• camping along Lake Superior

…you should absolutely be doing tick checks.

A few important things people still get wrong:

❌ Don’t burn them with matches
❌ Don’t smother them with Vaseline
❌ Don’t dump nail polish on them

Those old-school tricks are NOT recommended by the CDC and can actually make removal worse.

✔️ The safest removal method:

Use fine-tipped tweezers. Grab the tick as close to the skin as possible and pull straight upward with steady pressure. No twisting. No jerking.

Then clean the area with soap/water or rubbing alcohol.

After that, keep an eye out over the next few weeks for:
• fever
• fatigue
• headaches
• body aches
• joint pain
• swollen lymph nodes
• rash (and not everyone gets the classic bullseye)

One thing many people don’t realize:
A tick does NOT need to ruin your weekend immediately to become a problem later. Symptoms can show up days or even weeks afterward.

If you remove an engorged deer tick and think it may have been attached awhile, contact a doctor sooner rather than later. In some higher-risk situations, doctors may prescribe preventative doxycycline if started within 72 hours.

Honestly, this is becoming part of UP outdoor life now. The woods are still worth it. The trails are still worth it. Lake Superior sunsets are still worth it.

Just add “tick check” to the routine right next to bug spray and sunscreen.

UP Weather & Lake Life Update Manistique ☀️

Absolutely gorgeous stretch setting up across the central UP. Manistique is waking up to sunshine and cool lake air this morning with temps climbing into the mid 60s by afternoon. Light winds today are keeping things comfortable, and honestly… this is about as perfect as late May gets around here.

A few passing clouds possible this morning, but overall we’re looking at a very stable and quiet weather pattern heading into the weekend. Highs stay in the 60s with cool nights in the upper 40s thanks to Lake Michigan keeping things chilled near the shoreline.

Golfers at Indian Lake are about to get a near perfect run of weather ⛳️
Morning rounds may still feel crisp, but afternoons should be ideal with light wind and dry conditions.

Boaters and anglers:
Lake conditions look favorable overall, but remember the Great Lakes can change moods fast even on sunny days. Always keep an eye on marine forecasts before heading offshore. Water temperatures are still in the low to mid 40’s.

Honestly shaping up to be one of the better weather stretches we’ve seen so far this season around here.

Quiet one out there this morning across the UP.

Manistique is basically flat calm right now with light north to northeast winds around 2–6kts and waves mostly staying under a foot through the day. Munising and Grand Marais are seeing similar conditions this morning too. Honestly about as clean of a late May lake setup as you can ask for.

Temps climb into the upper 60s this afternoon with mostly sunny skies and very little wind through midday. Best conditions for anybody fishing, kayaking, running offshore, or just sitting at the harbor will probably be late morning into early afternoon before the breeze starts building again tonight.

Radar is showing a few small isolated showers drifting southeast through the western UP near Florence and Iron Mountain this morning, but they look weak and scattered right now with most of the central lakeshore staying dry.

One thing to watch:
After sunset the north wind starts tightening back up. Nothing major during the day, but exposed areas on Superior especially could start seeing gusts pushing 20–25kts overnight.

Cold water is still the real danger even when the lake looks friendly. Don’t let the sunshine fool you.

And for the golfers! Indian Lake Golf Course might honestly be perfect today. Light wind, dry air, sunshine, and temps warm enough to finally stop pretending it’s still April in the UP 😆⛳️
