Mankato Man pleads guilty Monday in federal court to money laundering charges, for his roll in the Feeding our Future scam.
Asad Mohamed Abshir, of Mankato, helped run the "Stigma-Free Mankato" site, which operated out of J's Sambusa in North Mankato from 2020-2021.
The site claimed to serve as many as 3,000 meals per day to children, and over 1.6 million meals in total during this time, receiving over $5.4 million in fraudulent Federal Child Nutrion Program funds.
Abshir is one of 14 defendants listed under the case 'United States v. Aimee Marie Bock, et al', and one of 47 total defendants in the Feeding our Futures Fraud Scheme, which misappropriated nearly $250 million.
In March, Abdinasir Mahamed Abshir, a co-conspirator at the North Mankato restaurant, pleaded guilty to wire fraud for his role in the scam.
He is set to received an enhanced sentence, due to a witness tampering charge back in February, when he was scheduled to testify against Aimee Bock, one of the "ring leaders".
Prosecutors say the money was used to buy property, jewelry, luxury cars, and travel. Abdinasir Abshir purchased a 2021 Range Rover, which was later seized.
