It's 10:47 PM, and I'm rage-scrolling Instagram.
I tell myself I'm "winding down." But my heart rate is up, my jaw is clenched, and I'm now weirdly upset about someone's kitchen renovation that I'll never be able to afford.
This is not relaxation. This is self-torture with a blue light chaser.
And the research confirms what I already know deep down: I'm making it worse.
Non-readers are 28% more likely to report depression. And scrolling before bed? It's suppressing melatonin, activating comparison mode, and keeping my brain in "alert" status instead of "rest" mode.
Meanwhile, reading fiction for even 10 minutes before bed:

Lowers cortisol
Signals "wind-down time" to my brain
Helps me fall asleep faster
Improves my mood the next day

So why don't I just... read?
Honestly? Because I'm exhausted. And scrolling FEELS easier even though it's making me MORE tired.
But here's what I'm trying this week: The Phone Swap.
Phone charges in the kitchen starting at 9 PM. Book on my nightstand. Just 10 minutes before I turn off the light.
I'm not trying to finish books. I'm not trying to be productive. I'm just trying to remember what it feels like to fall asleep thinking about a story instead of someone's vacation photos.
Watch this reel for the research on why reading beats scrolling for sleep, stress, and depression. (Spoiler: it's not even close.)
Who's doing the phone swap with me tonight? Drop a 📚 if you're in.

The delivery method changed. The feeling didn't. 🎶

Fergus has always known what takes some of us a little longer to learn — kindness isn't weakness. It's not naive. It's not the easy way out. It's actually one of the hardest and most important choices we make every single day. We wrote Fergus for kids, but honestly? He reminds us too. Be kind. Even when it's hard. Especially then.

There was a season of my life where I could sit down with a book and just... read it. Start to finish. Uninterrupted. I miss that person. Now I have four bookmarks in rotation, a reading glasses situation that has gotten out of hand, and I've read chapter three so many times I have it memorized. But I'm still reading. That counts for something.
