A View from the Hill…National Newspaper Week
It is National Newspaper Week (Oct. 5-11) and we at the Mapleton Press would like to thank our readers and customers for their support this year.
With a small staff, it is hard to cover everything and we try our best to bring you a quality newspaper each week. Donna and I make sure each issue has a “personal small town touch.”
There is nothing like a holding a hard copy of a small town newspaper.
People might ask, why should I subscribe to the newspaper?
In the Mapleton Press, we include
-Stories and Pictures from community events
-Pictures and stories from school activities and athletic events
-RamWriteups/Senior Spotlights
-Highlight events and people that make our communities special
When parent's are getting ready for their child's graduation reception, will you be able to find pictures of your child online or on Facebook?
You can make it easy by cutting it out of the Mapleton Press. My favorite thing to see at graduation receptions are newspaper clippings. I have started a box of newspaper clippings for my daughters.
You can cut out a picture of your child/grandchild and put in on the refrigerator. My Grandma's refrigerator would be covered with pictures of my siblings and me that she cut from the local newspaper.
When preparing the Photo Rewinds, I enjoy looking at the old stories, pictures and advertisements. If I didn't have a hard copy of past issues, how would be I able to found out who was Homecoming King and Queen 50 years ago so easily?
While watching my favorite show on Netflix, the town librarian said, “Books are like gold and stories should be shared.”
That is how I feel about stories in the newspaper, there are lots of stories that should be shared.
This partly why writing stories for the Retirement Lifestyles has become important to me. Many people I interview for this section say they don't have a story but in fact they do.
Stories in the Mapleton Press highlight what makes small town Iowa so special and that's why we do what we do.
If you are a current subscriber of the Mapleton Press, thank you! Be sure to encourage your family and friends to subscribe too.
