The holidays, of course, are a season for sharing. Inside the issue, you’ll find our annual Holiday Food & Gift Guide packed full of good things from across NJ to enhance your gift giving and entertaining this season. There are stories about food traditions, sweet potatoes, a German Christmas Market in Augusta, a beloved tea shop in Chester, a new wine bar in Newark and, of course, a few glorious recipes to sweeten the season.

In this issue, we also take look at a few of the countless organizations who are doing their best to support their community via food pantries, fundraising events, food banks. And more. It’s a pursuit that has become more important than ever. As writer Jill Waldbieser writes in “Choosing Hope”, a look at the Community FoodBank of New Jersey, food insecurity in our state has risen by 65 percent in New Jersey since the start of the pandemic in 2020

Our cover story looks at the remarkable Cathedral Kitchen, a non-profit organization who has been providing meals, culinary job training, and hope for clients in Camden for nearly 50 years. In 2024 alone, CK served more than 351,000 free meals. In a story written by Ifrah Aktar and photographed by Miana Jun, CK’s Senior Development Director Noreen Flewelling notes “As inflation and housing shortages have affected our community, Cathedral Kitchen is the safety net for so many people.”

With thanks and ❤️ to our writers, photographers and advertising sponsors, e hope our Holiday / Winter issue helps you to celebrate and savor the season – and to remember how fortunate we are to live in the generous, delicious and ever-amazing Garden State.

Fall has arrived this week, and so has our Fall issue!

A good portion of this issue celebrates the liquid assets of the Garden State. The local food movement that has taken hold across NJ in recent decades has been matched by an equally exciting local drinks movement. There's been a burgeoning rise in the number of wineries (The Garden State Wine Growers Association ), distillers, cider makes, craft brewers (Brewers Guild of New Jersey ) and even producers of coffee, tea and milk (Hun-Val Dairy Farm ) - many of whom did not exist two decades ago. We hope our Fall issue helps you learn about and experience them all. Click on the link below to download a free copy of the digital edition. Or pick up a complimentary copy of the print magazine at more than 700 locations statewide, while supplies last.

Is your farm dog a su-paw-star? Then don’t hesitate to nominate your dog for the contest: FB.Org/FarmDog

Farmers and ranchers are invited to submit nominations for the 2025 Farm Bureau Farm Dog of the Year contest, supported by Nestlé Purina PetCare. Now in its eighth year, the contest celebrates farm dogs and the many ways they support farmers and ranchers. The contest provides consumers with a window into farm life through a shared love of pets. Nominations for the 2026 Farm Dog of the Year contest close July 25, 2025. The grand prize winner will win $5,000 in prize money, a year’s worth of Purina dog food, and recognition at a Farm Dog of the Year award ceremony at the American Farm Bureau Convention in Anaheim, California in January 2026!

Shared by our friends at Edible Ojai & Ventura County. This not the way.

The UFW can confirm farm workers were critically injured yesterday during chaotic raids in Ventura County, California. Others, including US citizens remain totally unaccounted for.

Our staff is on the ground supporting families. Many workers, including U.S. citizens, were held by federal authorities at the farm for 8 hours or more. U.S. citizen workers report only being released after they were forced to delete photos and videos of the raid from their phones.

The UFW is also aware of reports of child labor on site. The UFW demands the immediate facilitation of independent legal representation for the minor workers, to protect them from further harm. Farm workers are excluded from basic child labor laws and it is unfortunately not uncommon for teenagers to work in the fields. To be clear: detaining and deporting children is not a solution for child labor.

These violent and cruel federal actions terrorize American communities, disrupt the American food supply chain, threaten lives and separate families.

There is no city, state or federal district where it is legal to terrorize and detain people for being brown and working in agriculture. These raids must stop immediately.

UPDATE: we tragically can confirm that a farm worker has died of injuries they sustained as a result of yesterday’s immigration enforcement action.
