36 years ago we ate lunch at Raul’s BBQ in Fort Davis, TX. Kirby had just finished the Prude Ranch Triathlon and I was pregnant with Roland. Today we went back.
It is now Rock N Raul's Smokehouse, and the food is incredible. We stood in the same spot and got this photo.

The Longhorn Ballroom has been a lot of things to a lot of people. It has been a venue for Black artists to perform during the Jim Crow era. It has been host to counterculture movements before they found their footing. It has been a country bar, and a gathering place

Wonderful night in Marfa last Monday at the screening of RETURN TO GIANT. Marcus Winslow, who is James Dean's cousin and the executor of the Dean estate, couldn't attend in person due to health reasons, but he made this video of himself in the James Dean Museum in Fairmount, Indiana, with some GIANT items that belonged to Jimmy. Marcus' son, Chuck, sent it to us to show to the crowd in the Hotel Paisano.
Enjoy! The James Dean Museum

We said goodbye to a mainstay of the Big Bend, Travis Roberts. He served as the chair of the Brewster County Historical Commission for many years and was a fount of knowledge about the Big Bend region. I corresponded via e-mail with him many times and he never failed to answer my questions. They gave him a really fine farewell in Marathon yesterday, fitting for a Texan of his caliber. He will be missed.

Just to illustrate how much Marfa has changed in my lifetime, here's some photos of the abandoned Hotel Paisano in 1978, and how it looks today.
Kudos to Joe and Lanna Duncan for the outstanding job they have done to save this treasure in west Texas.
