Taking care of the pumpkins like they’re my babies.

Last fall, I tossed our pumpkin guts into the flower bed and completely forgot about them.
Now... I have FOUR, pumpkin vines taking over my yard. (5 pumpkins so far)
Just a happy accident that’s turning into my own little pumpkin patch.
Now we’re all invested. 😂

How many will we actually grow by fall? Will the bugs or deer eat them? Do I really have to turn them? Stay tuned..

Placing a barrier between the growing pumpkins and the ground. Straw, cardboard, plastic saucers, roof shingles, wood. I tried cardboard (because that’s what I had) but y’all convinced me change to plastic. So I used the lid of an old container and that was ok. But, today we upgrade to larger saucers.
They will be turned upside down so water won’t collect.

Do I also need to drill a hole in these for drainage? Let me know. ⬇️

Last November, I threw our pumpkins by the bird feeder to compost. This summer, we have a massive pumpkin patch. (Massive for our front suburban yard.)

So far, we have lots of flowers and only five visible pumpkins, and they are all green.

Follow along and help me ‘farm’ these into Jack-o’-lantern pumpkins. 🎃

Well, y’all were right. Putting this big pumpkin on cardboard was not the move. Instead, I am placing her on a plastic lid.

I read online to put cardboard underneath the pumpkin so that they don’t rot in the ground and to keep the bugs from eating them so today, our number one pumpkin, Big Bertha, gets a stoop.

I went out of town to play tennis for two days and I came home to five pumpkins. Our main pumpkin is the biggest and she really grew. Lots of rain and our visit from the 🐝 bee gave us 4 additional pumpkins.
Plus, while I was away, the vines took to the little stick trail I made and are starting to go down in the direction I’m encouraging. Very exciting.

A lot can happen in two days. Lots of growth, lots of pumpkins.

This little pumpkin patch is growing from composted Halloween pumpkins. We have lots of flowers, but only one that has been pollinated to make a pumpkin. But today I saw a bee and so I’m hopeful that the Bee will pollinate the other flowers and give us some more pumpkins.

It’s been about a month since I noticed this composted area was growing a pumpkin. This vine is exploding. Growing it’s little curly arms and flowers. And yet- we only have one pumpkin. So far.
