“This was my first pheasant with my new pup, Pink, and she’s my first hunting dog of my own. I’ve hunted over my dad’s dogs and other peoples dogs for years but I finally decided on one for myself.

My dad took the new dog I got hunting with the group in Wisconsin (where he lives) for a few weeks before I was able to get up there (I live in Oklahoma). For this bird, my sister and I broke off from the group to see how Pink would do on her own. She was awesome and we quickly got our first bird together. Hunting with my family always makes for some special memories and this one was really awesome.
Now Pink and I are training and working towards hunt tests while we wait for the next season to open.” - Jackie

The Prairie Pothole Region isn’t just pretty country - it’s the duck factory of North America. 🦆

70% of our continent’s waterfowl are hatched right there, in those small wetland “potholes” scattered across the Dakotas, Montana, and the Canadian prairies. Problem is, we’re losing them fast. Often drained for row crops at a rate of thousands of acres a year.

No potholes, no nesting habitat. No nesting habitat, no ducks in the decoys next fall. Conservation isn’t a someday issue, it’s a right now issue.

Those small metal bands placed on a goose’s leg are part of a long-standing conservation effort that helps wildlife biologists understand and protect waterfowl populations.

Why birds are banded:
• Track migration patterns – Bands help scientists learn where birds travel throughout the year.

• Study survival rates – When a band is reported, it provides valuable data about how long birds are living in the wild.

• Monitor population health – The information collected helps wildlife agencies set responsible hunting regulations and seasons.

Hunters play a huge role in that research by reporting the bands they recover. It’s one of the coolest ways the hunting community contributes directly to conservation.
