Today’s episode comes to you from Little Compton Rhode Island, where we visit with Skip Paul of Wishing Stone Farm. He shares all kinds of tips and tricks he’s learned over his 40+ year career as a farmer growing mixed vegetables and fruit, largely sold at farmers markets. We cover greenhouse production to have tomatoes in early May, including grafting, heating, and steaming, then transitioning to the tunnels over to winter greens.

He shares how they grow both conventional and organic crops. Interseeding brassicas, cover crop incorporation with a high speed disc, stone barriers, flail mowers and power harrows.

Jacob and Jenna worked at a few different farms both locally and afar with the program. It didn't take them long to realize that their heart was in ag, and coming back to the family farm was the right move for their career. While they learned about other crops like blueberries and hops, picking up the retail side of the maple business is what ended up paying the Netflix bill.

Check out episode 42 to hear their whole start-up story into a successful ag business in Vermont.

What does the sugar woods look like? Like a forest! Except with a series of tubing running tree to tree like micro irrigation in reverse. Each tree gets a tap which feeds into main lines and gets collected into tanks.

In episode 42 we expanded our reach beyond fruit and veg farmers and interviewed a maple producer. Sugaring is so important in the state of Vermont, it was great to hear how the Baird's run an agriculture business off the working landscape. If you're outside of the region and not sure what maple production entails, Jacob shares a great overview from the basics to deep insider knowledge.
