CIA Records Houston / Starvation Dance Productions D*mn near 5!! decades of transgressive art and music from Houston and beyond. C.I.A.

Records is an independent label originally founded in 1978 by members of the Houston, Texas punk band Really Red. It emerged organically from sounds performed and recorded in people’s garages, back yards and warehouses, nurtured by strong friendships, a vibrant underground music scene, single-room strip mall record stores and a handful of non-commercial radio stations. In the late 70’s and early 8

0’s, the label filled an urgent need to confront institutional violence perpetuating a culture of fear that dominated Houston at the time. Over four decades it's grown into a platform for musical experimentation and risk-taking that continues to uphold a broad range of ideas, experiences and perspectives today. It has been, is now, and always will be a vanguard for transgressive music from Houston and beyond.

The documentation of Houston’s underground music scene continues today with the welcoming of Betsey.

Created by Mary Hayslip and known to generations of Mydolls fans as the band’s iconic mascot, she’s been part of Houston punk history for decades. From serving as the bands logo, appearing on stage at shows, and being featured on physical releases, to being present for countless other moments that helped define our city's punk scene - Betsey was and will always be an icon.

Now Betsey is headed to the University of Houston archives, where she will be preserved as part of the city’s cultural record. This matters because so much of Houston’s underground music history has lived in ephemera, memory, and personal collections - fragile things that disappear without care and intention. Archive work like this helps ensure that the people, objects, and stories that shaped this scene aren’t lost or flattened over time.

Special thanks to Mary Manning for helping make this preservation possible, and to Heather Johnson Heather L. Johnson for lovingly repairing the rips and tears Betsey accumulated over the years, making sure she’s ready for this next chapter.

From the stage to the archive - Betsey will stay part of the story. Always.

ILLBEONTHEFöNETOYOU - "Untitled" (Remaster)

They come from the land of burning chile and demented millionaires. Their songs are comic nightmares with anti-conformist themes. Weird, surreal music - scary, quiet, and sometimes hilarious. Their most outstanding features are their creeping, sinewy synthesizer and their percussion, which often pitter patters like dripping liquid or running feet. Their vocals range from a shoe-in for David Byrne to a once-removed Peter Lorre. Their press release simply calls them "crypto-pop," a term that suits the likes of the Residents and Pere Ubu, among few others.

I'LLBEONTHEFÖNETOYOU was a Houston, Texas-based band active from 1982 to 1989. Their self-titled EP was recorded at ACA Studios in June/July of 1982, with production assistance by engineer Andy Bradley, and released as CIA Records 010 the following September. Because ACA Studios had a prototype X-80 digital recorder on loan from Mitsubishi, this EP had the distinction of being one of, if not the first, digitally-mastered records released in the United States.
