CIA Records Houston / Starvation Dance Productions

CIA Records Houston / Starvation Dance Productions 4 decades of transgressive art and music from Houston and beyond. C.I.A.

Records is an independent label originally founded in 1978 by members of the Houston, Texas punk band Really Red. It emerged organically from sounds performed and recorded in people’s garages, back yards and warehouses, nurtured by strong friendships, a vibrant underground music scene, single-room strip mall record stores and a handful of non-commercial radio stations. In the late 70’s and early 8

0’s, the label filled an urgent need to confront institutional violence perpetuating a culture of fear that dominated Houston at the time. Over four decades it's grown into a platform for musical experimentation and risk-taking that continues to uphold a broad range of ideas, experiences and perspectives today. It has been, is now, and always will be a vanguard for transgressive music from Houston and beyond.

Check out this nice review of our Manifestation 11 compilation! It was penned by Ear Of Corn, a small zine from the Midwest.

Personally, I think all music recommendations should come from small zines in the Midwest - so big thanks Ear Of Corn and to all the bands who contributed to this weird compilation (especially the ones appreciated most by small zines in the Midwest.)

If you publish a small zine from the Midwest, or enjoy "ambient, experimental, and near noise" music, click the link in our bio to give it a listen and to scoop up a copy ~> 💻🕵️‍♂️

Spotify sucks.. we know this, and now so does everyone else. 🕵️‍♂️⚠️

This has been a huge talking point on the Internet this week. Everyone is looking for streaming alternatives and better ways to support the artist they care about. With that in mind we'd like to remind you that it's once again BANDCAMP FRIDAY!

On Bandcamp Friday, all sales go directly to the artist and help the labels that produce them. Your money not going to huge corporations like Sony, Columbia, or Warner - or just putting gas in another billionaire's jet.

Other than going to shows, which you should definitely do as often as you can, this is one of the best digital opportunities you have to support real independent artists.

Plus, if you buy from us, you get a really nice hand written letter from Bob!

When a beat becomes rolling thunder ⚡

As the drummer for Houston punk legends Really Red, our founder, Bob Webber, hammered out the rhythms that shook warehouse floors and helped light the fuse on our city's explosive underground scene. In the years that followed that same raw spark became CIA Records, the label he founded to keep Houston’s loud, weird, and unstoppable creative spirit alive.

What started as a beat in a DIY practice room has grown into a thunderous calamity of music, memories, and community. This Small Business Saturday, we celebrate the independent shops, labels, and makers who keep Houston noisy. And we celebrate Bob, the rhythm, the rebel, and the reason CIA Records still kicks.

While everyone is thinking about alternatives to Target, Amazon and the like this weekend - remember art. It's still out here and it still feels (and sounds) like the resistance we all need these days.
