Last spring, we had the pleasure of travelling to Riehen, on the outskirts of Basel, to meet Rahel Kesselring and walk with her through the park that frames one of the art world's most prestigious institutions.

Rahel Kesselring has become the first CHANEL botanical curator at the Swiss art institution, a brand-new role that transcends the walls of Renzo Piano's building and extends into its grounds, developing both public programming and a conservation plan for the resident flora and fauna "and the knowledge systems around them”.

At the eastern edge of the Fondation Beyeler, where the land slopes down to a pond fringed with reeds, sits Thomas Schütte’s bronze ‘Hase' (2013): a slightly melancholy hare, its mouth gushing a jet of water. It is one of Rahel Kesselring's most cherished spots on the museum grounds where she has worked since being appointed the CHANEL botanical curator by Fondation Beyeler and the CHANEL Culture Fund. And it is also an Art Basel exclusive cover story of The Plant’s issue 25. Last spring, we had the pleasure of travelling to the Fondation Beyeler to meet Kesselring as she was taking her first steps in a role conceived to foster a broader shift in the way we think about plants, nature and ecology ––a commitment with future generations that Yana Peel, President of Arts, Culture & Heritage at CHANEL, sums up as “planting trees whose shade we won't ever see”.

🌺 Eight Sketches of Flowers in the Spring with Sonja Alhauser 🌺

In this series of illustrations, reinterprets nature’s gestures. Flowers, fruits, and vegetables are alive – they hug, and they laugh, they dance and they pout. They’re as full of life as any other thing the earth grows, but now we speak the same language.

“Maybe it’s just pots to someone, but for me I see a whole world of stories and feeling in those vessels.(…) I was never interested in making perfect pottery. That was a problem for me in the world of ceramics. Once I learned you could break free and do what you want, I thrived.”

In “A Room of One’s Own”, we follow artist days at her home studio in Minneapolis. Sharing with us how to weave life and art together, she talks about her days of work and wanderings in Rome, about returning to a “sleepy” America, resisting through radical optimism, and her belief in pottery, not just as domestic art and craft, but as a container of everyday life.

“Plants might lack a central nervous system and have no eyes or ears, but their lives are not short of sensing. Whether it is the movement of a tendril, the folding of a mimosa leaf or the meeting with an ixia, touch is the common ground for us all.”
