On March 11, 2026, Boston Police Officer Nicholas O’Malley, a 33 year old married father of two with a previously unblemished record, was involved in a fatal shooting following a violent carjacking. The Suffolk County District Attorney’s office subsequently took the unprecedented step of charging him with manslaughter, the first time an on duty Boston police officer has faced such charges for a shooting in decades.
According to investigators, Officer O’Malley and his partner located the stolen vehicle in Roxbury with the suspect inside. When confronted, the suspect refused verbal commands, shifted into gear, and struck a police cruiser while attempting to flee. Officer O’Malley fired three shots through the window, stating he believed his partner was in immediate danger of being run over.
The DA brought charges based on body worn camera footage, claiming neither officer was directly in the vehicle’s path at the exact moment of the shots. The defence and police union strongly reject this, arguing that flat video cannot capture split-second human reaction times, depth perception, or the intense pressure of a rapidly evolving threat.

Derick Ortega, a 20 year old man from Hesperia in San Bernardino County, California, was reported missing after leaving his family home on March 5, 2026, under unusual circumstances. He has not been seen or heard from since.

Derick is described as approximately 5’6”, 170 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. At the time he disappeared, he was wearing a burgundy sweatshirt, brown trousers, and a black hat. He lives with his family in Hesperia, a desert city roughly 90 miles northeast of Los Angeles.

On the morning of his disappearance, Derick called his parents shortly before midday to say he could not drive his younger sister to a dentist appointment, despite originally planning to do so. He then left the home on Cactus Street. Security cameras reportedly captured him leaving and getting into his grey 2012 Honda Civic, the last confirmed sighting.

Notably, Derick left without his phone or identification, behavior his family says is extremely out of character. These unusual circumstances prompted the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department to classify him as a “critical missing person,” a designation used when someone may be at risk of harm or when disappearance appears involuntary.

Police are asking the public to report any information about Derick or his vehicle, especially sightings on the day he disappeared or afterward. His family has urged the community to help spread awareness, emphasising the emotional toll of not knowing his whereabouts.

The key unanswered questions remain why Derick cancelled the dentist appointment, where he intended to go after leaving home, and why he left without essential items. Until new evidence emerges, the case remains an active investigation.

23 year old law student Tara Baker was murdered in 2001. The case went cold for over 20 years, until DNA investigators claimed a match to Edrick Faust.

By 2026, a jury found him guilty on all counts, murder, sexual assault, burglary, even arson. He was sentenced to life plus 45 years.

But here’s the problem 👀
The DNA was decades old. Could it have been contaminated? Degraded? Could someone else have left it there? The defence wasn’t allowed to fully present alternative suspects or context. Faust even denied knowing Tara.

From my perspective, the jury got it wrong. This evidence should have created reasonable doubt.
