Hello Friends!
Happy Memorial Day! Memorial Day has a rich history in our nations story. First celebrated as Decoration Day on May 5, 1868 as a way to decorate the graves of soldiers, it is now one of the most sacred holidays we celebrate each year. Officially becoming a national holiday in 1971, it is a day that we all should take a long pause, and remember the men and women who have so selflessly served this country to protect our freedoms, and especially remember those individuals who have paid for our freedoms with their lives. It’s easy to sit back and think today is about cookouts, pool swims and ice cream. Today though, and even this week, I hope you will each take a moment and look around at all the freedoms we enjoy. When you do this, remember those lives that were sacrificed so that you and I can enjoy our plate full of food with family and loved ones.
I think today’s verse is a fitting verse for the importance of what today means. When Jesus spoke these words, he was speaking of sacrificial love. I cant think of a greater example of sacrificial love than a soldier laying down their life for their fellow soldiers and for you and me. It isn’t lost on me today, that for much of the history of our military, the men and women who have served have been predominately a volunteer force. When one enters any branch of the military, they take an oath to protect and defend this country, our constitution and its citizens. These men and women leave behind the comforts of home and put their lives on the line to protect our freedoms! Former Senator Fred Thompson said it beautifully when he said, “This wouldn’t be the land of the free if it were not the home of the brave.”
So, to all the men and women who have given their lives for us, just as Christ died for us, we at Wisdom In A Whisper say “Thank You” today and every day for ensuring our freedoms are something we can enjoy. God Bless our Military, and God Bless our Country.
