I’m honestly heartbroken and frustrated for my Quaker, Gizmo. 😢🦜
I bought him almost 5 years ago thinking he was a young bird, but after multiple vet visits, several exotic vets now believe he was probably much older than the paperwork claimed — possibly a middle-aged breeder bird who had already been through a lot before I ever met him. He came to me scared, missing his tail, cage-aggressive, and clearly carrying baggage, but I loved him anyway.
For the last couple of years, we’ve been battling feather plucking and now self-mutilation. This spring has been the worst yet. He has pulled out tail feathers, damaged flight feathers, opened wounds, and his balance is now off enough that the vet is worried about falls. He’s on medication now, and the vet says he’s otherwise healthy, which somehow makes this even more upsetting because physically he should be okay. 😭
