WHAT REALLY INSPIRED FDR TO BECOME ONE OF AMERICA’S GREATEST PRESIDENTS?
Jonathan Darman, bestselling author of “Landslide: Lyndon Johnson and Ronald Reagan at the Dawn of a New America” sits down with Michael Carter and Steve Murphy, Co-Hosts of the nationally syndicated LawBusiness Insider radio show, to discuss his latest bestseller, “Becoming FDR: The Personal Crisis that Made a President”.
Jonathan is a former national political correspondent for Newsweek, Jonathan covered the presidential campaigns of Hillary Clinton, John Kerry and Mitt Romney and wrote extensively about other major figures in national politics and media.
At age 39, Franklin Roosevelt saw his life upended by a sudden, devastating infection from the polio virus. The catastrophic illness looked like the end of his political career. Instead, it made him into the man who could lead his country through its own darkest hours.
An intimate chronicle of FDR’s years of illness, recovery and return to the heights of power, BECOMING FDR is a fresh look at the iconic president, his family, and his rivals. It uncovers the clear and striking connection between his private struggles and his later public triumphs.

"CRAZY EDDIE", aka Eddie Samar, was con artist worthy of the moniker, the ‘P.T. Barnum of Consumer Electronics Retailing’ in the 1970s and 1980s.
The chain rose to prominence throughout the Tri-State area, New York-New Jersey-Connecticut, as much for its prices as for its memorable radio and television commercials, featuring a frenetic, "crazy" character played by radio DJ Jerry Carroll (who copied most of his shtick from early TV-commercial pioneer, used car and electronics salesman Earl "Madman" Muntz. At its peak, Crazy Eddie had 43 stores in four states and reported more than $300 million in sales.
But like all “Too Good to be True” Conman schemes, Crazy Eddie finally had to face that ‘Come to Jesus’ moment when he knew he couldn’t sustain his fraudulent business practices, so rather than admit his con, he cashed in millions of dollars' worth of stock and resigned from the company in December 1986.
Crazy Eddie's board of directors approved the sale of the company in November 1987. The entire Antar family was immediately removed from the business. The new owners quickly discovered the true extent of the Antar family's fraud, but were unable to turn around Crazy Eddie's quickly declining fortunes. In 1989, the company filed for bankruptcy and was liquidated.
Almost from the beginning, Crazy Eddie's management engaged in various forms of fraud. The Antars deliberately falsified their books to reduce (or eliminate) their taxable income. They also paid employees off the books, and regularly skimmed thousands of dollars (in cash) earned at the shops. For every $5 Crazy Eddie reported as income, $1 was taken by the Antars.
Despite the misgivings of people closely associated with Crazy Eddie, the company held its IPO, on September 13, 1984 (former symbol: CRZY). Shares of the company sold initially for $8. By early 1986, Crazy Eddie stock was trading at more than $75 per share.
Eddie was eventually charged with securities fraud and insider trading, and ordered to repatriate more than $50 million he had transferred illegally to Israel. Again, rather than face the music, he fled U.S. jurisdiction to Israel.
Gary Weiss, the acclaimed award-winning investigative journalist, who has exposed Wall Street wrongdoing for nearly two decades, sits down with Michael Carter and Steve Murphy, Co-Hosts on the nationally syndicated radio show, The Law Business Insider, to talk about his latest bestseller, “Retail Gangster: The Insane Real-Life Story of Crazy Eddie”, which has been greeted by much critical acclaim.
He paints an intricate portrait of greed, aspiration, and complicated family ties bolstered by recollections from Sammy [Antar], whose eventual cooperation helped secure convictions for Eddie and other Antar associates. The scheme can feel almost nostalgic following more recent financial scandals and the collapse of physical retail, but Weiss also emphasizes its very real consequences: Eddie 'wasn't hated, but he hurt people.'
It's a rare business book from which you learn about an important industry and the methods of a criminal enterprise, all while shaking with laughter at the human beings involved as they attempt to rip off everyone in sight from customers to insurance companies to their own family members... Weiss writes up this tale of crime and punishment with great New York verve, delivering a probing examination of a profane way of doing business.

Bestselling author, Leslie Lehr, joins Michael Carter and Steve Murphy, Co-Hosts of the nationally syndicated LawBusiness Insider radio show, to explore the duality of today’s women to navigate a new path between s*xy and sacred.
Salma Hayek is developing Leslie’s critically acclaimed new memoir, “A Boob’s Life: How America’s Obsession Shaped Me… and You”, into a comedy series for HBO Max.
A prize-winning writer, Leslie’s books include What A Mother Knows, a Target Recommended Read, Wife Goes On, and 66 Laps, winner of the Pirate’s Alley Faulkner Prize. Her nonfiction books include Welcome to Club Mom, Club Grandma, excerpted on FisherPrice.com, and Wendy Bellissimo: Nesting, featured on Oprah.
In her book, Leslie wants to talk about b***s. She has gone from size AA to DDDD and everything between, from puberty to motherhood, enhancement to cancer, and beyond. And she is not alone - these are classic life stages for women today.
At turns funny and heartbreaking, A Boob’s Life explores both the joys and hazards inherent to living in a woman’s body. Lehr deftly blends her personal narrative with national history, starting in the 1960s with the women’s liberation movement and moving to the current feminist dialogue and what it means to be a woman. Her insightful and clever writing analyzes how America’s obsession with the female form has affected her own life’s journey and the psyche of all women today.
A Boob’s Life, her first project since breast cancer treatment, continues this mission, taking readers on a wildly informative, deeply personal, and utterly relatable journey. No matter your gender, you’ll never view this s*xy and sacred body part the same way again.

SCOTT TUROW, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of ‘Presumed Innocent’ and ‘The Last Trial’ joins Michael Carter and Steve Murphy, Co-Hosts on the nationally syndicated LawBusiness Insider radio show with his new riveting legal thriller in which a reckless private detective is embroiled in a fraught police scandal.
Scott is the author of many bestselling works of fiction, including Testimony, Identical, Innocent, and The Burden of Proof, and two nonfiction books, including One L, about his experience as a law student.
His books have been translated into more than forty languages, sold more than thirty million copies worldwide, and have been adapted into movies and television projects. He has frequently contributed essays and op-ed pieces to publications such as the New York Times, Washington Post, Vanity Fair, The New Yorker, and The Atlantic.
In his new novel, ‘Suspect’ he returns with a riveting legal thriller in which a reckless private detective is embroiled in a fraught police scandal.
For as long as Lucia Gomez has been the police chief in the city of Highland Isle, near Kindle County, she has known that any woman in law enforcement must walk a precarious line between authority and camaraderie to gain respect. She has maintained a spotless reputation—until now.
Three male police officers have accused her of soliciting s*x in exchange for promotions to higher ranks. With few people left who she can trust, Chief Gomez turns to an old friend, Rik Dudek, to act as her attorney in the federal grand jury investigation, insisting to Rik that the accusations against her are part of an ugly smear campaign designed to destroy her career and empower her enemies—both outside the police force and within.
Clarice “Pinky” Granum spent most of her youth experimenting with an impressive array of drugs and failing out of various professions, including the police academy. Pinky knows that in the eyes of most people, she’s nothing but a screwup—but she doesn’t trust most people’s opinions anyway.
Moreover, she finally has a respectable-enough job as a licensed P.I. working for Rik on his roster of mostly minor cases, like workman’s comp, DUIs and bar fights. Rik’s shabby office and even shabbier cases are a far cry from the kinds of high-profile criminal matters Pinky became familiar with in the law office of her grandfather, Sandy Stern. But Rik and Pinky feel that Chief Gomez’s case, which has attracted national attention, is their chance to break into the legal big leagues.
Guided by her gut instinct and razor-sharp investigative skills, Pinky dives headfirst into a twisted scandal that will draw her into the deepest recesses of the city’s criminal networks, as well as the human mind. But she will need every scrap of tenacity and courage to unravel the dark secrets those closest to her are determined to keep hidden.

WOW…. One of our editors sent me this ‘Throwback Thursday’ TV News clip of 15 years ago’ of the Insider Exclusive TV series that was originally broadcast in 2007 on American Airlines, Continental, Delta, U.S. Airways, and Jet Blue, featuring some of my guests and friends like Tom Mesereau Jr.
Tom is best known for acquitting the late Michael Jackson in his world-famous trial in Santa Barbara, California. Mr. Jackson was acquitted of all 14 charges in a child molestation indictment. Mr. Mesereau, as Mr. Jackson’s lead trial counsel, conducted jury selection, opening statement, closing argument, and examined and cross-examined every major witness in the five and half month trial. But Tom has accomplished far more than the Michael Jackson case.
Tom founded and co-manages the Mesereau Free Legal Clinic in Los Angeles. Lawyers, law students, college students, and concerned citizens come together twice a month to assist the poor. A scholarship for homeless children has been named after Mr. Mesereau. Each year, Tom marches with the Woman of Watts and their children against gang violence.
Also, Dr Lois Lee, founder of ‘Children of the Night’, who in 1973 wrote the bestselling book, “The Pimp and His Game,” the basis of her trainings of thousands of members of law enforcement and her expert testimony in state and federal courts since the 80’s.
Children of the Night is the first established and only comprehensive s*x trafficking program in the world devoted to the development of specialized programs and education for prostituted children and young people who need critical intervention to become successful adults.
Since 1979, Children of the Night has rescued over 10,000 American children from prostitution in the United States—that is more children than other s*x trafficking programs combined.
Throughout the years, Children of the Night has gained the reputation as one of the most prominent and successful organizations in the world addressing the needs of America’s s*x trafficked children.
And one of my favorites and most prolific bestselling authors, Lee Goldberg, who if you give him the chance, he’ll tell you he’s an ex-Navy SEAL, nuclear physicist and a professional Daniel Craig impersonator. But that’s said only in jest.
Seriously, he’s a genius at writing and his TV writing & producing credits have covered a wide variety of genres, including sci-fi (Sea Quest), cop shows (Hunter, The Glades), martial arts (Martial Law), whodunits (Diagnosis Murder, Nero Wolfe), the occult (She-Wolf of London), kid’s shows (R.L. Stine’s The Nightmare Room), T&A (Baywatch, She Spies), comedy (Monk) clip shows (The Best TV Shows That Never Were) and total crap (The Highwayman, The New Adventures of Flipper).
And Linda Feinstein, another one of my favorite bestselling authors, and former NY City prosecutor, who founded the Manhattan DA's SVU Crimes unit, from which Dick Wolf, Producer Law & Order, SVU, based many of his long running SVU episodes on her real life cases.
I once asked Linda why she decided to leave the Prosecutors office to write novels, and she said, (paraphrasing), “I got tired of Law & Order ripping off all our headline cases for their successful TV series.” During her tenure, she prosecuted controversial and highly publicized cases, such as the "Preppy Murder case" against Robert Chambers in 1986, and the 1998 People v. Jovanovic cases.

She's Baaaaack………..
35 Years Ago, Glenn Close’s character, Alex Forrest, in the blockbuster 1987 movie hit, “Fatal Attraction”, kicked up a tempest. She was the ‘Other Woman’ whose affection sours into something more obsessive, a swirling mass of emotions that got violent and deadly, when she didn’t get her way. She seethed; she screamed; And she boiled bunnies.
But 1987 was “Pre - All things Internet’, all things social media, Twitter, YouTube, and Facebook
This time “Alex” is Natalie Dominelli, the brilliant, intense, drop-dead gorgeous, super-rich Hollywood producer, owner of ND Studios, with tens of millions of adoring social media fans, and 3 Academy Awards to her name, and … ‘A very dark, dirty secret’ that she will stop at nothing to protect.
Natalie’s dark obsessive, pathological, psycho side turns even more dangerous and extreme, when she and her studio using anonymous, sophisticated AI “Deepfake” videos on social media to destroy and even murder her enemies to keep her secrets buried.
Who can stop her now?

LET'S NOT FORGET THAT Five people died in the Jan. 6 attack. Officer Brian Sicknick sustained a fatal stroke a day after rioters sprayed him with a chemical irritant. Air Force veteran Ashli Babbitt was shot by police when she tried to climb through a window and enter the House chamber.
A Georgia woman, Rosanne Boyland, was crushed by fellow rioters as they pushed their way against the police outside a Capitol door. Kevin Greeson, an Alabama man, died of a heart attack in a sea of Trump supporters on the sidewalk west of the building. Benjamin Philips of Pennsylvania died of a stroke during the assault on the Capitol.
Under federal law, involuntary manslaughter occurs when a person commits an act on federal property without due care that it might produce death.
Legally, Trump's refusal to step in when advised repeatedly by close advisors -- including his children -- that people could get hurt could serve as a starting point for multiple charges of negligent manslaughter.
For criminal liability, prosecutors must show not just simple negligence, but gross negligence, an extreme deviation from the standard of care. Here, Trump certainly was aware, or should have been aware, of the risk of death at the Capitol. And yet he failed to take action. Testimony from staffers who urged him to act will be important at the upcoming hearing, especially for establishing a failure to take due care.

A COMPLEX TALE OF CLASS DIVIDE IN THE HAMPTONS, OF GRIEF, PASSION, AND YOUTH – A MUST READ.
Bestselling author, Amanda M. Fairbanks sits down with Michael Carter and Steve Murphy, Co-hosts of the nationally syndicated radio show, The LawBusiness Insider to discuss her latest bestseller, “The Lost Boys of Montauk: The True Story of the Wind Blown, Four Men Who Vanished at Sea, and the Survivors They Left Behind.”
In her new nonfiction book Amanda explores how the 1984 disappearance of a fishing boat links back to generations of trauma among the haves and have-nots on Long Island’s east end.
An immersive account of a tragedy at sea whose repercussions haunt its survivors to this day, lauded by New York Times bestselling author Ron Suskind as “an honest and touching book, and a hell of a story.”
In March of 1984, the commercial fishing boat Wind Blown left Montauk Harbor on what should have been a routine offshore voyage. Its captain, a married father of three young boys, was the boat’s owner and leader of the four-man crew, which included two locals and the blue-blooded son of a well-to-do summer family.
After a week at sea, the weather suddenly turned, and the foursome collided with a nor’easter. They soon found themselves in the fight of their lives. Tragically, it was a fight they lost. Neither the boat nor the bodies of the men were ever recovered. The downing of the Wind Blown has since become interwoven with the local folklore of the East End’s year-round population. Its tragic fate will never be forgotten.
In this “riveting man-vs.-nature story and compelling tribute to those who perished” (Kirkus Reviews, starred review), journalist Amanda M. Fairbanks seeks out the reasons why an event more than three decades old remains so startlingly vivid in people’s minds. She explores the ways in which deep, lasting grief can alter people’s memories. And she shines a light on the powerful and sometimes painful dynamics between fathers and sons, as well as the secrets that can haunt families from beyond the grave.
In January 2022, it was reported the book had been optioned by Disney.

THE TRUE STORY OF HOW JOHN GLEESON PROSECUTED & CONVICTED "AMERICA'S #1 MAFIA MOBSTER, THE TEFLON DON", JOHN GOTTI
Federal Judge John Gleeson, and Former AUSA Lead Prosecutor of John Gotti, America’s ‘Teflon Don’, sat down with Michael Carter and Steve Murphy, Co-Hosts of the nationally syndicated LawBusiness Insider radio show, and dissected how he took on America’s ‘Teflon Don’ John Gotti, and more than 50+ Mafioso gangsters with the help of Sammy ‘The Bull’ Gravano, Gotti’s underboss, convicted them and seen them to prison.
It has been a while since front pages were dominated by mob wars and Mafioso bodies strewn across city pavements. So, Gleeson’s book, “The Gotti Wars: Taking Down America’s Most Notorious Mobster,” is a useful reminder, especially for Mafia romanticizers, that we’re dealing with sociopathic knuckle scrapers who settle scores with casual brutality. Gotti was no exception, never mind the “Dapper Don” image he cultivated, that of a wisecracking wise guy with a knack for beating the rap.
Just beneath that veneer lay a thug, one portrayed by Gleeson as a man with a gutter mouth who is caught on government wiretaps threatening to kill just about anyone standing in his way. He’s a guy who slimes a Jewish prosecutor in Italian as a “Christ killer” and Gleeson in English as an “Irish faggot.” The reality, Gleeson writes, is that “within the mob, Gotti was perceived as a dangerous loser.” And forget the uomini d’onore bunk: “They were backstabbing, treacherous thieves and worse.”
Gleeson tried Gotti twice. Lost the first time due to Gotti paying off a juror for $60,000., but the second time around, Gleeson built an airtight case, sealed with help from a Gotti crime family underboss named Salvatore (Sammy the Bull) Gravano.
He became what back then was a rarity on a par with Halley’s Comet: a mob turncoat. Gravano, a stone-cold killer who was himself indicted, grasped that a conviction was likely and that he’d be better off working with the feds and then being reborn in the witness protection program after a short prison spell. As a witness, he excelled. In short order, the jury returned a guilty verdict, and Gotti went off to prison, there to die of throat cancer in 2002 at age 61.
Gleeson’s distaste for some colleagues and adversaries is also evident. The turf battles between federal and state prosecutors could drive a teetotaler to drink. Rudolph Giuliani, Manhattan’s chief federal prosecutor in the 1980s, comes across as self-absorbed. Few fare worse than a prominent defense lawyer, Bruce Cutler, who may want to give this book a pass, portrayed as he is here as a bellowing courtroom blowhard, and not a notably competent one at that.
The Gotti Wars is a brilliantly told crime story that illuminates a time in our nation’s history when lawyers and mobsters dominated the news, but it’s also the story of a tenacious young man, in the glare of the media spotlight, who mastered the art of becoming a great attorney.

SOME PROSECUTORS – THE MOST POWERFUL ACTORS IN THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM – REFUSE TO SERVE JUSTICE
In an adversarial legal system, it’s natural to presume that prosecutors and defense attorneys are driven by the same goal: to win. They aren’t.
In Berger v. United States, decided in 1935, the Supreme Court famously declared that the prosecution’s ultimate goal “is not that it shall win a case, but that justice shall be done.” A prosecutor, the court wrote, “is in a peculiar and very definite sense the servant of the law, the twofold aim of which is that guilt shall not escape or innocence suffer.”
Embracing this “twofold aim” is at the core of a prosecutor’s work. The government brings cases it believes are supported by proof beyond a reasonable doubt. But when a prosecutor indicts, arrests, and prosecutes an innocent citizen, they have violated the oath of their office.
In this new Insider Exclusive Network TV Special, “Justice in America – Olga Hernandez’s Story”, our news team meets with Olga and her lawyer, Bill Reid, founder and partner at Reid Collins & Tsai LLP, in Austin, Texas to go behind the headlines and see how Bill won an acquittal for Olga.
According to the US Attorney’s Office and the FBI, Olga’s case was entirely predicated on the stupid assumption, that ‘just because Olga was friends with certain people, she had to be guilty of their crimes too.’
They were looking to fit a ‘Square peg in a Round Hole’, and did not care who they hurt or what the outcome was.
The power of the federal government, when they come after you, is extremely powerful and overwhelming. And when the government uses that process, illegally, to try to convict an innocent person, that's where the buck has got to stop. More than half of all wrongful criminal convictions are caused by government misconduct.
These prosecutors do not “do justice” as the Supreme Court defines it. The Olga Hernandez case reminded this prosecutor, Assistant US Attorney, Mark T. Roomberg, that the prosecution’s ultimate goal “is not that it shall win a case, but that justice shall be done.”

HBO Producers, David Simon and George Pelecanos, creators of the Emmy Award winning HBO TV Series ‘THE WIRE’ return to their familiar geographic and rhetorical turf, in their new HBO Series, “We Own this City”.
The six-episode scripted series is at once an extension, an updating and a partial revision of their landmark drama’s critique of policing. Its arguments are bold and impossible to miss.
While the April 2015 death of Freddie Gray, after a “rough ride” in a police van, is not depicted, it hangs over everything here, from Black Baltimoreans’ mistrust of the police to the post-Gray work slowdown by officers.
And no one knows more about the injustices and corruption in the Baltimore police and the Prince George's County police, and who represented Freddie Gray’s family in getting justice, than famed civil rights lawyer, William “Billy” Murphy, Jr.
In this new Insider Exclusive Network “Justice in America” TV Special “Prince George’s County Police Department Brutality & Murder – William H. Green’s Story”, Billy sits down with our news team, to discuss the cold-blooded murder of William H. Green, by former Baltimore Police Michael A. Owen on January 27, 2020, who executed Green by shooting him six times while Green was handcuffed, behind his back, and sitting in Owen’s police cruiser.
Owen was arrested and charged with second-degree murder, manslaughter, involuntary manslaughter, first-degree assault, and use of a firearm in the commission of a crime of violence, and is awaiting trial.
After an extensive investigation by Murphy, Falcon & Murphy, it was revealed that Owen had physically brutalized and violated no less than seven (7) citizens, all of whom are black, prior to murdering William Green.
After settling the Green case, on September 28, 2020, for $20 Million dollars, his firm filed another lawsuit in December of 2021, a federal civil rights mass action against Prince George’s County on behalf of these (7) victims.
As Billy has often said, “the problem of Police Brutality is much more widespread than most Americans are willing to admit. Our nation practices a selective blindness. In this great and strong nation, we have all become unwitting accomplices to the continuation of the conflict.
And the problem is not just in Baltimore or Prince George's County, but nationwide. And its nature is institutionalized. And because of that, he is driven to fight for people who had been harmed by the willful or negligent actions of others.
