Philip Roth said, “I don’t ask writers about their work habits. I really don’t care. Joyce Carol Oates says somewhere that when writers ask each other what time they start working and when they finish and how much time they take for lunch, they’re actually trying to find out, "Is he as crazy as I am?" I don’t need that question answered.”

Whatever it takes…

In the winter of 1934, Harlan County, Kentucky, was a place where the mines had gone dark and the company store had closed its credit. The men sat hollow-eyed by empty hearths. The children had stopped asking for supper.
It was the women who moved.
They called themselves nothing. No name, no organization, no banner. They were simply: the ones who walked.
Every morning before light, a loose group of women — some as young as fifteen, some as old as sixty — would gather at the edge of the holler and begin a four-mile walk through snow to the county church depot, where relief flour and dried beans had been sent from a charity in Cincinnati. Each woman carried what she could on her back. Each woman returned carrying more than she'd left with.
They never once asked who deserved it.
A widow named Cora Vance is said to have walked that road 61 days in a row without missing a single morning. When asked why she didn't rest, she said: "The snow don't rest. The children don't rest their hunger."
No photographs exist of the Bread Walkers. No county record lists them. One mention survives in a church ledger from March 1934:
"Distributed 340 lbs flour, 80 lbs beans this week. Distribution carried out by local women, names not recorded."
Names not recorded.
But the children they fed grew up. And some of them remembered.

Charm always carries the potential for harm. The aim of charm is to disarm. Defenses down, you're vulnerable to those with bad intention.
