Sing out loud!

Today is the poet Rumi's birthday. He offers this definition of ‘free speech’- “I want to sing like the birds sing, not worrying about who hears or what they think.”

I don’t mean to be uppity when saying my original art posted here is copyrighted; I just intend to clam it as my work, not belonging to Meta. These florals give me joy to make and share.

Gibran lit up my high school years!

Gibran lit up my high school years!

In 1895, a 12-year-old boy stepped off a ship in Boston with worn shoes and little English. He had come from the mountains of Lebanon with his mother, sisters, and half-brother—seeking hope, not certainty.
He was mocked in school for his accent. Dismissed as slow. Even called “filthy” because of his olive skin.
But his teachers noticed something: the boy’s sketches, his quiet wisdom, his ability to see the world differently. He soon mastered English—and with it, shaped a voice the world would one day recognize.
His name was Kahlil Gibran.
Tragedy struck quickly. Within a few years he lost his half-brother, his sister, and his mother—one by one to illness. His surviving sister, Marianna, worked tirelessly in a dress shop to support them both. Gibran never forgot. He would later write: “The most beautiful word on the lips of mankind is the word ‘Mother.’”
In 1923, he published The Prophet—a book of poetic essays on love, joy, sorrow, and freedom. It became a global phenomenon, translated into more than 100 languages, read by presidents, poets, rock stars, and millions of ordinary readers searching for meaning.
“Out of suffering have emerged the strongest souls,” Gibran wrote. “The most massive characters are seared with scars.”
Not bad for a boy they once called unwanted.
