As fall begins to near, a certain kind of pain enters my heart. This was the time of year that I would saddle up and just get to be one with nature on top of my best friend. Feel the fresh air, and take in all those rare quiet moments that are few and far between on the busy farm. But for a couple hours, we could escape the chaos.
Thor wasn't just a horse; he was a beautiful, chaotic force of nature who completely captured my heart. He had a mind entirely of his own, beautifully ornery and full of a fierce, playful attitude that always kept me laughing. Thor lived life completely on his own terms—whether he was happily splashing in the water hose, proudly throwing his feed buckets, or grabbing absolutely anything he could find off the ground. He was always the last in line on trail rides, because heaven forbid, he move any faster. He constantly challenged me and tested my patience, but beneath all that stubborn grit was a profound, fierce loyalty. We built a bond on mutual respect and endless entertainment, and his unforgettable spirit became the ultimate anchor for my soul.
As January 25, 2027, approaches, my birthday will bring a deeply bittersweet pause as it marks exactly three years since he has been gone. The absolute truth is that no other horse will ever come close to replacing him. The barn aisle is still entirely too quiet, and the pasture feels empty without his defiant, joyful presence. While other horses stand in his stall, none will ever match the magnificent, stubborn, and playful rebel that made him mine. Thor was a once-in-a-lifetime partner and an irreplaceable soul, and though time keeps moving forward, the space he left behind will belong to him forever. I will forever be grateful for the 10 years I was given with him.
