Same square. Same brick streets. Same country songs on the radio from Dallas and Nashville. I figured I had already heard what country music had to say.

Then October happens.

A woman from Namibia walks onto the Memorial City Hall Performance Center stage and sings like she learned every heartbreak in Harrison County. A voice from the Republic of Georgia turns a four-song set into church. Someone from Kenya, someone from Malta, someone from Yorkshire outlaw country, all of them in a hall built as a World War I memorial, two blocks from where I buy coffee.

You don’t watch it the way you watch a stadium show. You sit close enough to see when a lyric lands. You hear the room answer. By the second night you stop keeping score of countries.But, you recognizing the music.

That’s the Texas Sounds International CMAs

Three nights, a new lineup each night, twenty-two elite acts from sixteen nations, then Sunday when they hand out trophies instead of checks.
If you live in the ArkLaTex and you think you’ve already done country music, this is the weekend that proves you haven’t.
