Know Before You Mow!
Grass clippings that are blown into the street enter storm drains and are carried directly to our local lakes, ponds and streams. Those clippings contribute nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorous, which cause unwanted and uncontrolled growth of algae. Leave your grass clippings on your lawn instead of bagging them and it will provide free fertilizer and reduce water pollution. Contrary to popular belief, doing so doesn’t cause thatch buildup. For more information on how to create a beautiful healthy yard the natural way, go to www.WaterSmartSouthShore.org
WaterSmart is a nonprofit partnership between the NSRWA and 12 towns on the South Shore: Cohasset, Duxbury, Hanover, Hingham, Hull, Kingston, Marshfield, Norwell, Pembroke, Rockland, Scituate and Weymouth. Our programs are based on the belief that education is key. Since its creation, WaterSmart has educated thousands of local school-age children, adults, and businesses on water conservation, stormwater pollution, where their water comes from, and how to care for it.

It’s getting to be that season again…

National parks offer a unique experience for watching wildlife. But with that privilege comes great responsibility. Visitors are responsible for their own safety and for the safety of the animals, too. Simply put, leave animals alone—no touching, no feeding, no harassing. Do not feed any animals from your car and keep an eye on the road for any wildlife that may decide to cross at any time.

Now this message is not for those who know what’s up and would never dream of getting too close to wildlife on purpose. Thanks for leading by example! Think of this as a message to share with others you may know heading out to a park. “Vacation brain” sometimes makes an appearance, and people may let their guard down, or get taken in by a bear’s fluffy ears, only to have a less than pleasant experience in nature. With nature? Nature doesn’t care about your vacation. It happens. Every year.

In conclusion, remember to keep your distance from wild animals, and enjoy your experience watching wildlife. Find more tips at: https://www.nps.gov/subjects/watchingwildlife/

Infographic entitled “Wildlife Safety” with a chart of two columns. First row has an illustration of someone feeding a squirrel “nope” example next to an illustration of a person distanced next to no feed sign as “better” example. Second row has an illustration of a person taking a selfie next to a bear as and the word “nope” next to an illustration of a person far away from a bear with words, “good job”. Third row has an illustration of a person next to a moose with the word “nope” next to an illustration of a person far away from a moose with words, “now you got it”. Fourth row has an illustration of a person about to touch a bison as a “why?” example next to an illustration of a person running away from charging bison herd with words “Good luck”.

Does your town or school have this event during senior week?

It's that time of year again. Our high school seniors are chasing each other around with water guns.

Yes, for those of you who have never heard the tradition of "Senior Assassin", it's here again. The "game" involves high school seniors "shooting" each other with water guns in what becomes an epic battle to be the last one standing. Sort of like a Hide and Seek - but with water guns.

Because the game involves a certain degree of hiding to surprise other players, we inevitably receive reports of suspicious persons that turn out to be students playing the game. While this can seem like innocent fun, it can have serious consequences. Just yesterday, we responded to a report of a female brandishing a firearm. The firearm turned out to be a water gun.

While we are not encouraging this behavior, we are working and communicating with Quincy Public Schools to ensure everyone stays safe, and we wanted to pass on a few safety reminders to participants:

If someone isn't playing or doesn't want to play, they're off limits. If you're asked or told to stop, it means stop. Capturing another player, or otherwise physically touching or blocking them, is not an acceptable part of the game.

Do not trespass onto another person's property while playing (especially at night) and, if asked to leave, do so immediately.

Use water pistols that are brightly colored and are clearly toys.

Don't play while driving. Or near cars that are. Actually, just stay out of the street.

If you see us coming, it's probably because someone called to report suspicious activity. Don't run. Don't hide. We at the Quincy Police Department are the true hide and seek champions. Just explain to the officers what you are doing and cooperate if they ask you to stop.

To our residents: if you see something or someone suspicious, please don't confront them yourself. Call 911 and we will check it out.
