Really nice compliments from our Chancellor. Thank you, Dr. Carver, for your kind words about Kayla and your support of "The Hawk!"

Please allow me to brag on one of our students for a moment.

Kayla Brooks is a bright ray of sunshine from Dickson, Tennessee. She’s a senior studying communications and is a bundle of positive energy around the Department. Kayla hosts a radio show, is a fixture on campus television and also writes news articles. She’s served as an orientation leader (SOAR) and as a student pep leader too. In her spare time, Kayla teaches yoga for Campus Recreation.

She interviewed me today about the campus response to COVID-19. Despite all our current challenges, Kayla is working hard to keep her fellow students informed and enlightened. Even over Zoom, she was engaging and kept the conversation moving.

I’ve known Kayla since her freshman year. She’s just one of those people that enters your life and inspires you to be a better person.

Kayla plans to continue in journalism and be someone “who tells people’s stories.”

And that’s why I want to share her story.

Kayla- thanks for choosing us for your college home. You make me #UTMproud!

Today, he was honored with the TN Alumni Outstanding Teacher award. We appreciate everything Dr. Robinson does for us, and we congratulate him for the well-deserved recognition!

In Jessica's own words:

• What’s next?

"I’m currently planning to attend law school in the fall. I have not yet decided where I’m going, but I have been accepted."

• Reflections on your time at UTM:

"I couldn’t have asked for better professors or mentors than those found in the Comm. Dept. They’ve guided me with patience while being true masters of their craft. I would like to moreso thank those found at WUTM. Both Professor Freed and Dr. Robinson have given me mentorship and advice that I will carry throughout my life, and I couldn’t thank them more for investing in me not only as a student but as a person."

• Favorite memory?

"I have a very tight-knit group of friends, and all but one of them I met through the Comm. Dept. Every year in December we all pile into the biggest car we have and travel around to look at the Christmas lights for hours on end. We didn’t have to be talking about anything that really mattered because it was when we were just laughing and acting like kids again that we found true joy. I think it is those times that I will miss most about UTM because I’ve learned that you don’t have to spend a ton of money or go far away to find a new adventure as long as you have friends willing to go make one with you."
