Once designed for European soldiers to carry ammunition, bandolier bags took on new life in the hands of Indigenous artists.

With cross-body straps and rectangular forms, these bags were woven into existing traditions — once used to carry medicines like to***co, now adorned with vibrant glass beads introduced through trade.

As Native communities were forced into closer proximity in the 19th century, they shared techniques, styles, and stories — and the bandolier bag evolved into a powerful expression of cultural adaptation and resilience.

What a wonderful surprise it was to receive a copy of Tim Carpenter’s book “The Grave Robber” in today’s mail. Tim is the former head of the FBI’s Art Crime Team. We got to know him as he worked to return over 42,000 artifacts stolen from all over the world by amateur archeologists Dan and Sue Miller. Most of the items were Native American.

After skimming the book, it looks like a good read, particularly Chapter 12 “The Ceremonial Sheild: What ARPA, NAGPRA, and the STOP Act Can’t Stop.”

ATALM is grateful for the small role we played in returning the items. The process partially inspired us to start “The Going Home Fund,” a mechanism for connecting collectors to descendant communities and then funding the cost of the returns.

We are blessed to have significant funding from the Mellon Foundation, with additional support from the Luce Foundation and the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians.

We have a web portal if you would like to see the hundreds of items available for return. Here is the link: https://www.atalm.org/programs/current-programs/going-home-returning-material-culture-to-native-communities/
