Union City school students have risen to the occasion to help others during the holiday season.
School Communications Director Mike Hutchens said students and staff have donated more than 13,000 cans and non-perishable food items to three charitable organizations.
To assist those in need during the holiday season, the school donations were presented to the Feeding of 5,000, Chimes for Charity and Natalie’s Place Food Bank.
The collection efforts were part of the annual Turkey Trot and Pacer Test at Union City Elementary, with Nikki Gilliam’s third grade class earning a pizza party for the most donations.
Union City Middle School topped their goal of 3,000 cans by more than 600, with the 5th graders bringing in nearly 1,500 food items.

The Union City School System received good news this week.
School Communications Director Mike Hutchens said each of Union City’s three campuses have been recognized as a Federal Reward School for the 2024-25 year.
The announcement was made by the Tennessee Department of Education and Governor Bill Lee.
Additionally, Union City Schools joined thirteen others in receiving the prestigious designation as an Exemplary District.
Director of Schools Wes Kennedy said the Reward status for all three schools marked the first time the achievement had been reached in 17 years.
A Reward school designation is the highest distinction a school can earn.

An Exemplary designation comes from a scoring of at least 3.1 out of 4.0 in high performance, student attendance, postsecondary readiness and significant growth in academics.
