American black bear (Ursus americanus)
American black bears can come in a wide variety of colors from light brown to cinnamon to grey. They are differentiated from brown bears by the shape of their head; they lack the distinctive shoulder hump of a brown bear and have shorter claws more suitable for climbing. They are excellent climbers, as well as being fast runners and capable swimmers. Males weigh between 130-500 pounds, while females are slightly smaller, weighing between 90-330 pounds.

Grizzly bear (Ursus arctos horribilis)
The grizzly bear is featured on the California state flag.
When settlers first arrived here, 10,000 grizzlies roamed the state. As the human population expanded, hunters and ranchers killed large numbers of them.
Today, grizzlies are extinct in California, but are still found in Alaska and Canada. Fewer than 1,000 remain south of the Canadian border.
