SUNDAY THOUGHT: MAYBE THIS WORLD ISN’T AS BAD AS IVE ALWAYS BEEN MADE TO THINK IT IS. ❤️🙏

We hear so much about everything wrong with this world that sometimes it’s easy to forget just how much good is still walking around in it.

These past few months have shown Colton and even more blatantly, myself, a side of humanity I honestly wasn’t prepared for.

The picture I’m sharing today is Colton with the very first tech we had at Craig. From our very first night here, before McGulley really even knew us, her compassion was obvious. And she was only the beginning.

We’ve met nurses, techs, therapists, strangers and people from back home who have loved this kid in ways they were never obligated to.

And just this week, another one.

An individual who absolutely refuses to be recognized quietly stepped in and not only bought, but even upgraded our airline tickets home so this final part of Colton’s journey could be a little easier.

No Facebook recognition wanted.
No public thank-you.
No name attached.

Just kindness.

And that immediately made me think about Matthew 6:3:

“Do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing.”

Jesus wasn’t teaching us that kindness has to be secret. He was teaching something much bigger:

Don’t just do good so that people will see you doing good.

Some of God’s greatest blessings come through people who don’t need applause for delivering them.

After everything we’ve experienced, I’m becoming convinced this world isn’t nearly as cold and uncaring as we’re sometimes led to believe.

**There are angels everywhere!! We’ve experienced them in abundance during this most traumatic time in our son’s life. **

Some wear scrubs.

Some wear therapy badges.

Some wear Military uniforms.

Some fly airplanes!!

Some send cards and packages.

And apparently some quietly purchase and upgrade a father and son’s home bound tickets and then nicely, albeit sternly tell them to keep their name out of it. 😂❤️✈️

Maybe we just notice those people differently when life brings us to a place where we desperately need them.

There is still so much good in this world.

And this Sunday, Dad and Colton are incredibly thankful we’ve been blessed enough to see so much of what God placed humanity here on earth for firsthand.

WHY DO BAD THINGS HAPPEN TO GOOD PEOPLE?

Even with all the accomplishments and goals reached, dad still wakes up from every small movement he hears across the room in Colton’s bed asking to make sure his son is ok. And then when he quietly and sleepily responds with, “I’m good dad”, I lay my head back down, now somewhat awake and the thoughts and pondering creeps in….

I’ve asked God the question in the heading more times these past few months than I care to admit.

Why cancer? Disease? Depression? Losing people we love? Addictions? Why does a healthy 22-year-old kid leave home on a dirt bike and come back in a wheelchair?

The Bible doesn’t promise us an easy life.

We live in a fallen world. Pain, sickness, tragedy and death are unfortunately part of this broken place.

Jesus Himself said, “In this world you will have trouble.” That’s means all of us…., even YOU!!

But He followed it with:

“Take heart! I have overcome the world.”

I’ve watched my son go from needing help with nearly everything—to dressing himself, transferring himself, showering, wheeling wherever he wants and now learning to drive again.

There were nights I cried and asked God, Why him? Why us? Why aren’t You fixing this?

And slowly I’m learning…

God’s timing doesn’t have to make sense to Dad. And honestly, it never does. Probably never will.

Maybe faith isn’t believing God will keep every storm away. Maybe it’s trusting Him enough to keep walking through one helluva hurricane.

Because I’ve realized something else through all of this:

Without faith, I don’t know how I’d make sense of this life here on earth, especially this portion of it where my son has a wheelchair permanently attached to his ass.

If everything we love, suffer through, fight for and eventually lose simply ends here, then some days this world can feel pretty damn miserable and pointless.

But I DONT believe it ends here NOR does my son!!

This life isn’t the finish line.

So today, instead of asking “Why us? Why me? WHY MY KID? Why my family?”

I can look at that positive young man rolling around independently, smiling, living and planning his future…

and simply say:

“Thank You, God. We’re still here.”

And somehow, today…

that is absolutely enough. ❤️🙏

WELL… THEY OFFICIALLY CUT THE CORD. 😂♿

We’re packed. We’ve moved out. And yesterday they officially cut off Colton’s umbilical cord; the hospital wristband.

Sounds freaking GREAT, doesn’t it?!

Yeah… until Dad realized what that actually means.

No more Jade.
No more Melissa.
No more Pete.
No more Jenn
No more nurses and techs.
No more being pampered.

Apparently Craig has decided Dad is now the nurse, tech, chauffeur, babysitter, equipment manager and general keeper of this carnivall. 😂

All joking aside, we are both a bit nervous, but this is a pretty incredible moment.

Colton is doing extremely well for what he has to deal with, but I truly believe that by the time we leave Colorado in a couple weeks, he’ll be capable of doing dang near everything he needs to do independently.

Think about that.

A few months ago we had absolutely no idea what his future was going to look like.

Now we’re talking about him driving himself around Martinsburg.

And today is another BIG step toward that freedom.

Colton finishes the last portion of his adaptive driving testing using hand controls today. Once completed, he’ll have the certification/prescription needed so that when we get him a vehicle and install the proper adaptive controls…. the boy will get a little more of his freedom back. 🚗💨

And something tells me once he’s loose, we won’t have much trouble figuring out where he went.

Check the bowling alley first. 🎳😂

We’re officially outpatient. We’re still in Colorado for a couple more weeks. And then, God willing…

we’re coming HOME.

What a ride this has been.

And what a beautiful thing it is to finally start seeing Colton’s road home.

MAYBE “STILL WTFO” WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO BE JUST ABOUT COLTON.

Tomorrow is a bittersweet day for us.

It’s officially move-out day. Colton leaves inpatient rehab and we head to outpatient—a HUGE step closer to finally pointing this whole shenanigans back toward West Virginia.

And maybe that’s why we’ve been thinking so much lately about what Still WTFO could become.

Because every last one of us is fighting something.

Injury. Cancer. Disease. Depression. Addiction. Grief. Divorce. Financial struggles. Fear. Loneliness. Loss.

Some battles put you in a wheelchair.
Some put you in a hospital.
And some leave absolutely no scar anyone else can see from the outside.

Life eventually knocks every damn one of us down. And at times - Life down-right SUCKS!!

WTFO started with Colton—a motorcycle kid whose entire life changed in seconds.

Once, WTFO meant Wide The F*** Open.

Then life changed, and it became:

Walking Through Faith To Overcome.

But maybe it was never supposed to stop with him.

Maybe WTFO belongs to the cancer patient walking into another treatment. The person battling depression who gets out of bed one more morning. The veteran trying to find his way home. The addict celebrating another day sober. The grieving parent. The person learning to walk again—or learning how to live an incredible life without walking at all.

Anybody staring at something they never asked for and refusing to let it have the final word.

That’s where we’d eventually like to take this possibly.

Not just shirts, hats and merchandise.

A community. A mindset. A motivation. A Support. A reminder that whatever you’re fighting, you’re not fighting alone.

Tomorrow Colton rolls into the next chapter of his journey.

Maybe Still WTFO does too.

Born from Colton’s fight.
Built for everybody fighting one of their own.

Whatever you’re facing…

KEEP MOVING. KEEP BELIEVING. KEEP GOING.
Not only is Colton: Still WTFO, but now and forever…

YOU: STILL WTFO. ❤️🙏♿🏋️

THE CARICATURE PRETTY MUCH SAYS IT ALL. ❤️

We continue to receive cards, letters, goodies, supplies, prayers and love from so many incredible people.

My apologies if I haven’t been able to personally mention or thank every single person lately. With our Craig departure getting close, Dad’s days have been consumed with paperwork, packing, flights, transportation and figuring out how in the world we’re getting this traveling circus back to West Virginia. 😂

But please know—nothing goes unnoticed and nothing goes unappreciated.

Every card. Every package. Every prayer. Every kind word.

We see it. We feel it. And we’re incredibly grateful. ❤️🙏

Still WTFO.

P.S. If anybody reading this happens to own a private jet, helicopter, or anything else with wings and a couple empty seats, Craig Hospital coordinates are 39.6547° N, 104.9780° W. 😂✈️ Dad and Colton will be standing by with luggage packed. ASAP would be greatly appreciated. Destination: West Virginia. 😂

APPARENTLY THEY LIKE HIM TOO. 😂🎳❤️

Today Carolyn from Occupational Therapy and Allison from Recreational Therapy took Colton out bowling for a kinda one last “Good-bye fun get-away”.

And not on some big scheduled group outing either.

Just the three of them.

Two therapists and one ornery West Virginia kid heading out to roll a few balls and enjoy an afternoon away from Craig.

I’ve said since Colton was little that there’s just something about this kid. He’s quiet. He’s sweet. He doesn’t demand attention. But somehow people get around him for a while and before long, they love the little s**t like he is one of their own!!

His friends back home know it. His family knows it. And apparently after a few months at Craig…

they know it too.

As a dad, there’s something pretty darn special about watching people who started out simply doing their jobs end up genuinely caring about and even loving your kid.

These are the little things that won’t show up on a discharge report or therapy evaluation—but they’re some of the things Dad will remember most when we leave.

Carolyn and Allison, thank you for giving our boy an afternoon that felt a little less like rehabilitation and a whole lot more like hanging out with friends. ❤️🎳

And Colton…

Keep being exactly who you’ve always been buddy. It makes us all proud!!

P.S. Colton says he was just being a gentleman and let the ladies win. 😂🎳 And because he’s such a sweet, charming young man, I’m sure Carolyn and Allison will graciously agree that’s exactly what happened. 😂

Still WTFO. ♿🎳❤️

THE LIGHTS ARE STARTING TO DIM…

3:30 this morning.

Empty streets of Englewood. An almost-dark Craig Hospital. And an empty gym Dad has walked into more mornings than I can count.

For the last few months, this little corner of Colorado has been our entire dang world.

These streets became my morning walk.
That Craig sign became our address.
That gym became Dad’s escape.

And inside that building, my son has been learning how to live his life all over again.

But now the lights are starting to dim on this chapter.

September 1st, Colton moves from inpatient to outpatient. We’ll stick around just long enough to finish a few things, get flights and equipment squared away…

Then we’re pointing this circus EAST.

Home.

Colty and myself have wanted that word more than anything for months. Yet walking these empty streets this morning, I realized I’m actually going to miss this place.

Not the surgeries.

Not the hospital BS.

But the people, the memories, and what happened here.

The kid who arrived stuck in a hospital bed is getting ready to roll out of Colorado under his own power.

Soon these streets won’t be my morning walk. That gym won’t be waiting at 3:30 a.m. And the Craig sign will become something we used to call home.

Maybe God never intended for us to stay in every place He carried us through.

Some places are simply meant to prepare us for the next one.

The lights aren’t going out.

They’re just starting to come on somewhere else.

And that somewhere…

is HOME. ❤️🙏♿🏁

Still WTFO.

P.S. There are a lot of things about Colorado I’m going to miss. What I will NOT miss is walking into that tiny Anytime Fitness and finding the CrossFit disciples simultaneously occupying 5 freakin machines like the CrossFit Games unexpectedly relocated to Englewood. 😂🏋️

Apparently “WOD” stands for “We Occupy Damn-near-everything.” Pick one machine to use at a time in a public gym PEOPLE!! The rest of us pay dues too. 😂

THE ROAD HOME IS STARTING TO COME TOGETHER. ❤️♿🇺🇸**

And you know its something awfully special if I post twice in one day at this point!!! Keep reading MF's.....

For months, nearly everything we've posted has been about surgeries, therapy, wheelchairs, setbacks and learning how to live this new life.

But behind the scenes, Dad's been working on a whole different kind of rehab...

**Paperwork. Lots and lots of freaking paperwork.** 😂

And lately, some of it is finally starting to pay off.

Colton's state disability benefits are approved and getting underway. ✔️

He's officially enrolled in VA healthcare, and we're now working our way through the VA benefits side to see what additional help and resources may be available. 🇺🇸

But then came one that hit Dad a little differently...

We've learned that Colton is being sponsored by the Gary Sinise Foundation for grant assistance toward some of the adaptive necessities we're going to need back home.

That's a pretty darn humbling sentence to write.

Because these things he need aren't just toys anymore.

They're ridiculously expensive pieces of equipment that can give a 22-year-old young man back parts of his independence, freedom and ability to live his own life.

And every single person (all of you guys reading this) or organization willing to help us put another one of those pieces back into place means more to this family than they'll probably ever understand.

A few months ago, "going home" scared the hell out of me.

Today, little by little...

**it actually feels like we're building a life to go home TO.**

And for that...., Dad, Mom, Chloe and Colton are incredibly thankful.

Still WTFO. ❤️♿🇺🇸
Walking Through Faith to Overcome

P.S. I've never considered myself much of a cult-classic movie connoisseur... but let's just say **Forrest Gump has permanently moved to the top of Dad's movie list.** 😂

And Lieutenant Dan?

After what the Gary Sinise Foundation is doing for my boy, Gary Sinise could make a three-hour instructional video on how to finally break your bubble-gum-chewing addiction, and Dad would watch every stupid second of it..., knowing full well I'd be sitting there chewing a mouth full of Juicy Fruit with absolutely ZERO intentions of quitting and Id still give that SOB five stars.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐😂

SOB = "Servant OF the Brave" for all you rotten minded folks.

**Lieutenant Dan will forever be my favorite movie star.** ❤️🇺🇸

TODAY WAS SUPPOSED TO BE ALL FUN & GAMES… 😂♿🏁

We actually got to do a bunch of the fun stuff today.

First up—the standing frame. And for the FIRST time, Colton went all the way up with NO blood-pressure drama whatsoever. Apparently his body finally got the memo that standing doesn’t require trying to pass the heck out. 😂

Then we moved on to some important preparations for home.

In and out of the side-by-side a few times just to make dang sure we know how we’re going to tackle ours when we get back to WV.

Then on and off the ATV—because apparently one of Colton’s first priorities upon returning home is figuring out how to steal his little sister’s four-wheeler. 😂

And FINALLY…

WE GOT OUR RIDE.

The Vette. The Charger. The Cadillac. Call it whatever you wish.

It ain’t quite the Lamborghini or Bugatti yet (unfortunately insurance and Colton’s wallet dictates that end of the bargain) but this will be Colton’s wheels for a while when we get home—and seeing him sitting in HIS chair makes this whole going-home thing suddenly feel a whole lot more real. 🧡♿

Standing. Side-by-side. ATV. New chair.

One helluva day to say the least….

So naturally, because apparently we’re not allowed to simply end one on a high note…

During Fit Class, Colton appears to have pulled or aggravated his lat.

Yep.

Potentially the same muscle involved in that wonderful little adventure we affectionately remember as the flap surgery.

Because why wouldn’t it be? 🤦‍♂️😂. OUR luck??

Hopefully it’s nothing more than an angry muscle reminding him it’s still there.

Two steps forward, one little “bleeping” step backward… and we keep rolling.

Still WTFO. 🏁♿🧡

P.S. Dad would like to formally request ONE completely uneventful day before we leave Colorado. No surgeries. No passing out. No mysterious pains. No insurance investigations. Just one boring-ass day where the biggest emergency is deciding what color sour patch kids we are gonna empty out of the packages, that all you sweet people sent. 😂🙏
