Shockley gets 12 years

MORGAN COUNTY — A Mooresville teen has been sentenced to 12 years in prison this morning after pleading guilty to charges related to a planned shooting on Valentine’s Day at Mooresville High School this past February.
Trinity Shockley, now 19, pled guilty last month to the charge of conspiracy to commit murder, as a level 2 felony.
Superior Court I Judge Dakota VanLeeuwen handed down the sentence this morning in a hearing that lasted nearly two hours.
Judge VanLeeuwen sentenced her to 20 years, with 12 years behind bars, 8 years suspended, and five years probation following her incarceration.

More to come in next week's Correspondent.

Work on the outside of the historic Morgan County Courthouse building got rained out this afternoon, but contractors have been putting in a lot of work throughout the week. And that work continued inside today, along with the ongoing masonry work on the bricks of the clock tower.
Much of the structure for the new addition to the courthouse was put in place, which will ultimately have a matching facade to go along with the matching windows.
The northside addition will provide space for ADA-compliant elevators along with a stairwell.
Work is set to resume next week, depending on weather.

Bray makes additional statement on redistricting

STATEHOUSE — Senate President Pro Tem Rodric Bray (R-Martinsville) made the following statement this afternoon regarding redrawing Indiana’s congressional maps mid-cycle:

“I want to be abundantly clear that our Senate Republican Caucus wants to see a Republican-held House in 2026 so that President Trump can continue making progress on important issues like fighting illegal immigration and crime in our country.

“However, many in my caucus, myself included, do not feel that redrawing our Congressional districts mid-cycle is the best way to achieve that goal. We would rather support efforts to elect a Republican in the existing 1st Congressional District, which has been trending Republican for the last several years and would give President Trump another Republican in Congress.

“We don’t believe the choice to redistrict is a binary choice where we will either keep a 7-2 map or draw one that automatically becomes 9-0. Candidates in these hypothetical districts have not walked a parade, attended a county fair or raised a dollar. And that’s before we get through primary season, in which we can assuredly expect competition.

“I’ve had the honor to speak with the President on this issue, and I have expressed to him that our caucus is supportive of him and wants to maintain Republican control of the House, which is why we believe pursuing Congressional District 1 is the best way forward.”

Contractors open up the inside parking on Washington Street in downtown Martinsville this afternoon, which adds an additional 14 spaces on the square's south side. The middle of that block will still be used as a construction entrance for the courthouse work.
In addition to the parking, 18 new light poles have been installed along the interior of all four streets that surround the courthouse.

Indiana Senate says NO to redistricting

STATEHOUSE – Despite pressure from President Donald Trump and Gov. Mike Braun, the Indiana Senate announced this afternoon that it will not be convening next month in Braun's redistricting effort.

Senate President Pro Tem Rodric Bray (R-Martinsville) made the following statement today regarding the possibility of redrawing Indiana's congressional maps mid-cycle:

"Over the last several months, Senate Republicans have given very serious and thoughtful consideration to the concept of redrawing our state's congressional maps. Today, I'm announcing there are not enough votes to move that idea forward, and the Senate will not reconvene in December."

Google representatives have been making the rounds this week with local officials and stakeholders as they look to establish goodwill and pave the way for the new data center planned for the Monrovia area.
On Wednesday evening — as seen in the photo — a wine-and-dine private event took place at the new steakhouse in Martinsville, where a host of local officials were on hand, including county commissioner Bryan Collier and his wife, county councilman Joe Crone, former county administrator Josh Messmer, county surveyor/plan commission member/EDC executive board member Terry Brock and his wife, and Martinsville Mayor Kenny Costin and his wife, as well as representatives from Morgan County Rural Water Corp., among others.
Morgan County Economic Development Corp. (EDC) executive director Mike Dellinger organized the evening's festivities, which included nearly two dozen people in total. When asked who was footing the bill, Dellinger would only say it was "not taxpayers."
And last night, a similar private gathering took place in Mooresville at a brewery on the south side of town. Once again, Google reps were on hand to make the acquaintance of local stakeholders, including Messmer as well as county commissioner Don Adams, among others.
Google is expected to soon announce local organizations that will be receiving the first round of donation dollars from the global tech company, with more rounds anticipated.

Contractors are paving the parking areas along Morgan and Main streets in downtown Martinsville today, which means one-way traffic on both roadways.
They'll finish up early today as a precaution for Halloween festivities this evening, but they'll be back at it tomorrow so that striping and signage can be installed next week.
Washington Street parking is also scheduled to be paved next week, weather permitting. That will mean one-way traffic at various times as they complete stone, grading and paving work.

FINAL UPDATE: The coroner has made contact with next of kin, and notification has been completed. Morgan County Coroner Mike Ellis wishes to thank the community members for their assistance in this matter.

UPDATE: The coroner has been made aware of and spoken to Ms. Lyons' ex-husband, Scott Wertz, and he is grateful for all those trying to help in the case. However, because they were divorced, he is not considered a legal next of kin.

The Morgan County Coroner's Office is seeking the public's assistance to locate the next of kin for the female found deceased at the Holiday Inn Express on Martinsville's south side yesterday.
According to documentation found at the scene, her name is Christina Georgianna Lyons, 62, and she was believed to be homeless, though a license found at the scene had a Bloomington address listed.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the coroner's office by calling 812-821-0149 or emailing [email protected].
