7:48 p.m. SAT - 8/22/26 - There are two 2️⃣ areas of severe storm cells. One in SE Franklin County near Snow Creek moving East at 15 mph.

Another cluster of storms is concentrating its main intensity to the Rocky Mount / Sontag / Sydnorsville areas and may even merge with the Snow Creek cell.

There is going to be a LOT of lightning ⚡️ with these cells due to dry air and evaporation aloft, helping to electrify updrafts and “chill” the cloud droplets, forming large hail as well.

Sudden gusty winds are also possible and could be strong enough for damage - 50-65 mph - as the cold and heavy air aloft slams down to the ground.

A beautiful day on the Smith River! Smith River Fest has been full of great music, good food, family fun and plenty of time spent enjoying everything the river has to offer.

There’s still time to come out and enjoy the festivities. Smith River Fest continues until 4 p.m. today at Monogram Foods Smith River Sports Complex. Come on down and make the most of the afternoon!

7:22 pm SAT - 8/22/26 - HUNKER DOWN, ROCKY MOUNT AND FRANKLIN COUNTY!

Damaging winds and hail moving east toward Rocky Mount and will be near town by 7:52 p.m.

This is a Severe Thunderstorm! It has hail as seen by radar and the turquoise sky looking west toward Grassy Hill from the home office in Rocky Mount.

There’s also a high amount of cloud-to-ground lightning ⚡️ with these storms.

TAKE COVER AWAY FROM WINDOWS IN A STURDY BUILDING in the path. Smith Mountain Lake may be hit by 8:20-8:40 pm if the storm holds together.
