Setup and sound check are done, and here’s the view from my office tonight as my friends and I in The Traveling Salvation Show are ready to share our take on the music of Neil Diamond with the people of north-central North Carolina!

As the Owner and Chief Engineer at Flatlander Sound Studios, this video from Rick Beato hits on the evolution of my experience recording and producing music with clients for over 27 years. It's becoming increasingly rare to have musicians playing live instruments together in my studio, creating the unique vibe and magic that can only occur when musicians feed off each other's energy and creativity. I'm blessed as a member of The Traveling Salvation Show to still do it "old school" as we record REAL music made by humans--with emotion, life, spirit, and soul. I'd love to have more clients like that. So many clients now come in with a backing track or "beat" produced on a computer that lacks all those things that make music powerful, emotional, inspiring, and special. The advent of artificial intelligence as a tool to produce music will make things even worse--as the tools will only produce computerized rip-offs of the real experts the AI programmers have modeled.

This studio welcomes any musicians out there who still value making it real, human, imperfect, passionate, and impactful.

In this episode, I discuss the crisis in music in two acts: Act I - Music is too Easy to MakeAct II - Music is too Easy to Consume...and their cumulative neg...

I’m NOT TAGGING ANYBODY!! Calling ALL My Vets. My circle may be small, but I got enough SOLID brothers and sisters in my life. I am doing a battle buddy check-in showing support for one another. I need at least 7 warriors to post this message to show you are ALWAYS there if someone needs to talk. I have no idea who will say Done in my post but I have faith!

Here's some serious food for thought for Indie music artists who aren't sure what to do to build their music careers for success...from my friends at DiscMakers.

Music success is fine for some, but if you want to fail at this whole indie music thing, here’s a sure-fire recipe to achieve that goal.

Rock, pop, hip hop, jazz, R&B, rap, reggae--and best-selling audiobooks--come out of my studio. Man, I love this work! Recorded and produced here at Flatlander Sound Studios and just released on Amazon and their audiobook division, Audible, is this new book entitled "On Hunting: A Definitive Study of the Mind, Body, and Ecology of the Hunter in the Modern World." It's a fascinating work, written and narrated by Pulitzer-nominated author and renowned speaker Lt Col Dave Grossman, with co-authors Linda K. Miller and Capt Keith Cunningham.

This is the third audiobook I've done with Dave Grossman--a fellow veteran and man of God I have enormous respect for. With Linda and Keith, we had a great week recording the manuscript, along with many extra features available only with the audiobook version.

I get to work on some of the coolest projects--right here in Mascoutah!

Vocalist Alex Rozelle was in to mix down the nine songs he'd recorded here a couple weeks ago--a great smoky tenor with fantastic feel and control. Blues, gospel, country, and rock--he covered it all! This is his first recording, and I'm sure he'll be back for a second!

Most artists are mindful of these, fortunately.

"The 'Master' was perfect!" This is client feedback yesterday on a song I "mastered" for him here at Flatlander Sound Studios this weekend. Mastering is the final step in the music production process--where a great performance recording not only gets its final technical adjustments required for global distribution, but the entire recording gets its final polish, sheen, with a sprinkling of a sort of artistic "pixie dust" from an experienced engineer. It can turn an excellent recording into something magic...and I do that routinely at Flatlander Sound Studios!
