Earlier today, The Harlan County Coroner’s Office released the names of the father and daughter that passed away in the Sunday night accident on U.S. 119 near Cumberland. Prayers for the family.

Press Release:

At 7:49 pm on July 6, 2025 the Harlan Co. Coroner's office was notified of a Motor Vehicle Accident with fatalities on US Hwy 119 just above Cumberland, KY.

Deputy Coroner Dale Halcomb responded and pronounced Trey V. Stewart, 25 of Partridge, KY and his daughter, Kieranee E. Smith, 9, deceased at 8:30 pm from injuries sustained in the accident.

Other occupants from both vehicles was flown to area medical centers, while one was taken to Harlan ARH.

The investigation into the accident is continuing by the Kentucky State Police.

Halcomb was assisted at the scene by Coroner John Derrick Noe and Deputy Coroner John Jones.

UPDATE 5:25PM

WYMT is reporting that Perry County Sheriff Joe Engle has released the shooting victiim’s name as 63 year old Wallace Cornett, of Viper.

Police say Cornett was fatally shot with a shotgun around 1:57pm this afternoon inside a home at the Middle Fork of Maces Creek Road in Viper.

Deputies say a 16-year-old was detained and charged with one count of murder.

Cornett’s body will be sent to the state medical examiner’s office in Frankfort for an autopsy.

ORIGINAL STORY:

The Perry County Sheriff Department reports that they are investigating a deadly shooting in the Viper community.

The Sheriffs Office says a person was found dead from an apparent gunshot wound on Middle Fork Maces Creek Road near Viper.

FATAL ACCIDENT ON U.S.119 IN CUMBERLAND

UPDATE: From KSP Post 10 -
🚨 TRAFFIC ALERT – FATAL COLLISION ON US 119 🚨

This evening at approximately 6:50 PM, Kentucky State Police Post 10 Harlan received multiple calls regarding a two-vehicle collision on US 119 in the Cumberland community of Harlan County.

Troopers responded immediately and began an active investigation. KSP can confirm that this is a fatal collision, and US 119 is currently blocked. The roadway is expected to be shut down for approximately one hour.

Multiple individuals have been flown from the scene due to serious injuries.

Assisting KSP at the scene are:

Cumberland Police Department
Cumberland Fire Department
Harlan Rescue Squad
Harlan County Sheriff’s Office
Harlan County Coroner’s Office
Lifeguard Ambulance Service
We will provide updates as more information becomes available regarding the road closure and those involved.

Please avoid the area and allow first responders to work safely.

Traffic remains blocked on US119 near Cumberland where a multiple vehicle accident occurred just after 7 p.m. first responders from the Kentucky State Police, Harlan County Sheriff’s Department , Cumberland Fire Dept., and Life Flight Air Rescue are currently on the scene. Two helicopters and multiple ambulances were assisting with transporting accident victims.
