We are heartbroken by the passing of our dear friend, Art Ramon .river.meat.company We send our deepest condolences to his family and everyone who loved him.
Art was not only a good friend, but a valued contributor to Edible Rio Grande magazine. At our very first Ranch to Table dinner in 2024, he stepped in as featured chef and pitmaster and fully embraced the vision of cooking over open fire. The first event is always the hardest — and Art helped bring it to life in a way we will never forget.
He created a menu filled with mouthwatering dishes featuring fresh, local ingredients prepared over an open flame. To this day, we still hear praise for that unforgettable meal. In a past fall issue of the magazine, we shared the story of that dinner along with Art’s tips for preparing cabrito — a true reflection of his passion and skill.
A proud Brownsville native, Art was known not only for his creativity in the kitchen but for his generous heart. When floods struck near Kerrville, he was among the first to respond — cooking for 21 days straight to feed volunteers and survivors, then another 21 days north of camp. With the help of the community he built, more than 30,000 meals were served in 42 days. Last October, he returned to Brownsville to host a BBQ fundraiser for a friend facing medical challenges. That’s who he was — always showing up for others.
Art leaves behind his wife, Jessica, three young boys under the age of nine, and five older children who loved him deeply.
In his short life, Art made a lasting impact on so many.
A GiveSendGo fund has been created to help ease the financial burden for his family. 100% of the funds will go directly to Jessica.
Please keep his family in your prayers. He will be deeply missed.
