This pencil sketch of Franz Schubert standing in the shadow of the famous Austrian baritone Johann Michael Vogl is credited to Franz von Schober, a poet, librettist, lithographer, and actor. The drawing humorously highlights the difference in professional status between the two at the time, in a way that would later prove insightful; while Schubert was far less known than Vogl when the caricature was made in 1825 (just three years before Schubert’s death), this would certainly change with time.

Despite their different levels of fame, Schubert and Vogl formed one of the most fruitful collaborations between a singer and composer in the history of Western classical music. Vogl recognized Schubert’s talent early on and helped bring his compositions to the attention of the Viennese public through his performances. When they met in 1817, Vogl, then 49, was already a fading star of the Vienna Opera. His work with Schubert, however, gave him a new direction as a recitalist. Schubert spoke warmly of their partnership, describing how:

“The manner in which Vogl sings and I accompany, how we appear in a given moment to be united into one, is something quite new and unheard-of.”
