Updated plans for the 2,200-acre Red Ridge Development will be back before the Valley County Planning and Zoning Commission for a public hearing on Feb. 25.

Plans submitted to Valley County include 722 homes on about 800 acres of the property, the same updated proposal that was presented to neighbors of the project in a meeting on Nov. 10.

The public hearing before the P&Z commission is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Feb. 25 at the Valley County Courthouse in Cascade.

The update includes 408 fewer homes than the first proposal that was pulled from consideration in Dec. 2024.

Traffic lights on Boydstun Street and deed restricted units for local housing are part of the proposal.

A landslide on the South Fork Road means that Warm Lake Road and Johnson Creek Road are likely to remain open to the public this winter.

The landslide occurred between milepost 12 and 13 on Thursday, collapsing about 55 feet of roadway. The Payette National Forest closed the road on Friday.

Johnson Creek road and Warm Lake Road have been plowed by Perpetua Resources this winter for access to the Stibnite Mine.

Valley County Commissioners had considered a closure of that route in an effort to avoid collisions, especially on the steep grade between Warm lake and Landmark Summit.

But the South Fork Road slide “changes everything,” with the Johnson Creek route now the only road into Yellow Pine, officials said on Friday.

If you don’t already follow Todd Cook’s page McCall Weather, well, now’s the time.

Todd has been forecasting local weather and posting daily updates on the page since 2020.

We interviewed Todd on what goes into each daily forecast for a feature story on the front page of today’s print edition.

On a day without a lot of incoming weather, he spends about 30 minutes per day looking at weather models and writing the forecast for his page. On a high weather day, he can spend more than three hours combing through the information and crafting his forecast, even when on vacation.

As an avid snowboarder, Todd uses his page to forecast for Tamarack Resort and Brundage Mountain Resort, and updates his followers on each resort’s expected snowfall amounts.

The applicant behind the 316-home Garden Valley development proposed on West Roseberry Road will seek an extension on the project on Thursday. The final plat must be recorded by Jan. 17, or its approvals will expire.

The extension request will be heard in a public hearing before the Valley County Planning and Zoning Commission. The meeting begins at 6 p.m. at the Valley County Courthouse in Cascade.

A conditional use permit for the Garnet Valley proposal was issued by Valley County in January 2024, but no construction has taken place on the 39-acre property about three miles west of Donnelly.

As approved, the project includes 306 units in nine, two-story apartment buildings and 10 lots on 39-acres off West Roseberry Road.

The 2026 Idaho Sled Dog Challenge 300 and 100-mile races have been canceled due to a lack of snow and unsafe trail conditions, organizers announced on Thursday.

“After careful consideration and assessment, we regret to announce that due to dismal snow levels and unsafe trail conditions, the 100 Mile and 300 Mile races for this year’s Idaho Sled Dog Challenge are officially canceled,” said race organizer and founder Jerry Wortley.

The long-distance races were scheduled to start Feb. 2.

The Warm Lake Stage Race, however, could still go on if more snowfall arrives.

"The Warm Lake Stage Race is still under observation with a final decision made by January 15th, and we will keep you updated on any changes or decisions regarding that event,” Wortley said.

The Payette Lakes Recreational Water and Sewer District approved a $6.9 million funding offer from the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality, which will be used to replace the district’s ripped and leaking sewer pond liner.

The district hopes to replace the liner this summer, but whether or not that happens depends on finding a qualified company to complete the work.

An effort to replace the liner last year fell through when only one bid from an unqualified company was submitted.

Valley County officials called Perpetua Resources proposed $50,000 per year contribution to the county road system nothing more than “peanuts,” but they may have to agree to it anyway.

Valley County Commissioners and other county officials met with Perpetua Resources representatives on Dec. 22 to negotiate a road development agreement, which would also see the mining company take over year-round maintenance of Warm Lake Road at a cost of a bout $120,000 per year.

No agreement was signed at the meeting and commissioners meet again to discuss the proposal at 10:30 a.m. on Jan. 12 at the Valley County Courthouse in Cascade. A proposed wintertime closure of Warm Lake Road about three miles past the intersection with the South Fork Road is the main topic of that meeting.

Valley County commissioners said they would likely not gate Warm Lake Road (near Warm Lake) during the wintertime. But commissioners’ said their top concern is avoiding accidents between mining traffic and snowmobilers and skiers on the road.

Snowmobilers and backcountry skiers have objected to the gate with hundreds of comments sent to the county. No resolution was reached in a meeting on Monday, but commissioners plan to discuss the issue further on Jan. 12.

Perpetua Resources will plow Warm Lake Road and Johnson Creek Road this winter as the company’s primary access to the Stibnite Mine.

Warm Lake Road to Johnson Creek Road past the intersection with the South Fork Road has been a groomed snowmobile route for years. An alternate route was planned, but will not be used this year because it was hung up in litigation.
