An idea to add a new elite judging category to the Morgan County Junior Fair competition more than a half-century ago will celebrate its 50th anniversary at next week’s 173rd Morgan County Fair.

Then-Junior Fair Board President Robert M. Fling, a student at Morgan High School, active in Ridge View 4-H and a dairy exhibitor, began pursuing the notion of forming an additional judging competition for the top Showman winners in the individual exhibitor categories. Fling and fellow Junior Board members and others traveled around to other county fairs and agricultural events to learn about similar competitions. Their proposal was approved by the Morgan County Agricultural Society and the first “All-Around Showman of Showmen” contest premiered during the 1975 Morgan County Fair. That event was sponsored by the Penn Sheep and Beef Club.

Beginning Sunday, September 7, crews will begin transitioning from Phase 2 to Phase 3 construction for the I-70 reconstruction project in Zanesville. As part of this work:

• Eastbound I-70 traffic will shift into its new configuration. Motorists should anticipate lane shifts and possible delays during this transition.

• Once eastbound transition is complete, westbound I-70 transition will occur. Traffic will be placed into an express lane pattern, similar to the eastbound configuration during Phase 2.

• Once Phase 3 configuration is fully in place, the Underwood Street off-ramp will be closed to allow crews to complete necessary repairs along the I-70 mainline.

Drivers are urged to use caution, follow posted signs, and allow extra travel time through the work zone. This work will be completed overnight.
