“It’s going to be missed—because good things are missed,” reflected Tom Nelson.

Nelson and his wife Kathy have been coming to the Marquette Bar and Cafe regularly for 25 years. They were among the many customers who were sad to see the business close on Nov. 23 after over a century of operation as not only a restaurant but what Nelson described as “a cultural center point” of the community, “a wonderful place where good people can get together.”

Just two weeks after accepting the resignation of Monona Police Chief Austin Wille, the Monona City Council last week accepted the resignation of police officer Jacob Dougherty. Dougherty was hired earlier this year and was only recently certified after attending the law enforcement academy.

The council approved advertising for the officer position, in addition to offering the chief position to a candidate interviewed that day. The individual, whose name was not disclosed at the meeting, boasted good qualifications and a lot of experience, said council member Preston Landt.

The historic Kennedy home on Center Street, in McGregor, has a new lease on life thanks to a nearly decade-long restoration effort by Duane Boelman and Ellis Seavey.

When first approached about purchasing the property, the two were unsurprisingly hesitant. The 2,500- to 3,000-square-foot home—originally built in the 1870s and added onto over the years—had been sparsely lived in and kept up in recent years. They feared it was a tear down.

Instead, Boelman and Seavey tore into it, putting in thousands of hours of work. They are proud of how far they—and the house—have come. “These old houses, I like to think we’re caretakers of them, hopefully,” reflected Boelman.

The article has more details on the project and advice on how you can tackle your own restoration. 🏠
