Beyond the Stars Jackpot Show

The Beyond the Stars Jackpot Show will return to the Garrett County Fairgrounds in McHenry, Maryland, on June 13–14, 2026, bringing together youth livestock exhibitors, families, and agricultural supporters from across the region for a weekend celebrating hard work, competition, and community.

The two-day event will feature beef, lamb, swine, and goat competitions, including showmanship classes and market animal divisions, with exhibitors traveling to Garrett County to compete and connect with others involved in agriculture and youth livestock programs.

But organizers say the event is about much more than ribbons and prizes.

The Beyond the Stars Jackpot Show was created to continue Kenzie’s legacy through a foundation dedicated to supporting student athletes and agricultural students and fair exhibitors by providing scholarships to help them begin their college journeys. Organizers say the mission of the event is to inspire others and lead with kindness.... just like Kenzie did.

Summer Splashing at Mountain Lake Park

Written by Evan Byrne.

Mountain Lake Park’s first 60 years featured a small lake where families could gather in the summer while children splashed about in the water to cool off. Although that lake has long been lost to history, 6 years ago the town created a new spot for families to gather while kids cooled off that was unlike anything ever seen in Garrett County — a splash pad.

The splash pad is located at Leo Martin Memorial Park just south of Maryland Highway (MD 135) on G Street in Mountain Lake Park. Spread across its 1,650-square-foot slip-resistant surface are mushroom, fire hydrant, and rain curtain features along with dumping buckets, water loops, and 18 random jets of water. “My kids love playing in the water, getting dunked on by the buckets, staying cool, and making new friends just about every time they are there,” said McHenry resident Erin Painter. She continued, “It’s in a very convenient location, easily accessible, has decent parking, lots of space to spread out your towel and relax, the covered pavilion makes it nice for shade, and the best thing is: it’s free!”

The Black Bear Tavern & Restaurant Under New Ownership

As of May 1, Black Bear Partners officially became the new owners and operators of the longtime Deep Creek Lake gathering spot, Black Bear Tavern. Their immediate plans are to restore the tavern’s reputation as a go-to destination for food, drinks, entertainment, and community.

The ownership group includes Warren and Barb Porter, longtime patrons whose love for the Black Bear inspired them to purchase a home within walking distance of the tavern; Mark and Mollie Cicacci, who have spent nearly 30 years making Deep Creek Lake their second home; and Garrett County resident Nick Senella, who remembers the Bear as one of the premier destinations for nightlife and entertainment at the lake.

June 2026 Issue

Dear Friends,

Summer has officially arrived at Deep Creek Lake and I am so here for it!

This month is one of my favorites because we’re also producing the Summer / Fall 2026 In Good Taste Menu Guide. It celebrates something we all love about this area: the shared experiences around the local food & drinks.

We’re also excited to introduce our new “Raise a Glass” feature in that magazine that highlights some of the incredible drink destinations throughout Garrett County and around the area. I hope it inspires you to try somewhere new, stay a little longer, and maybe even discover a new favorite spot.

As always, thank you for picking up this magazine and supporting the local businesses that keep this community vibrant year-round. If you snap photos of your favorite meals, drinks, or summer adventures, tag us on social media — I love seeing Deep Creek through your eyes.

See you around the lake!
