Oktoberfest Returns to the Grantsville Town Park on September 19

Grab your stein, put on your best German-inspired outfit, and get ready for an afternoon of food, fun, music, art and friendly competition when Oktoberfest returns to the Grantsville Arts & Entertainment District on Saturday, September 19, from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. The celebration will take place at the Grantsville Town Park and is hosted this year by the Grantsville Lions Club and the Grantsville Arts & Entertainment District.

Designed as a festive community gathering for all ages, Oktoberfest brings a taste of German tradition to the heart of Grantsville while highlighting local businesses, breweries, food vendors, artists and artisans, and community organizations.

250 Years of Cookery in the Tablelands

A free history talk exploring 250 years of agriculture, cooking and food in Garrett County and the surrounding region will be held Thursday, Sept. 17, at 6 p.m. at Garrett College.

Presented by George Cowgill and the Garrett County Historical Society in recognition of America’s 250th anniversary, the 1.5-hour program will offer a light-hearted look at how agriculture, cooking and food have changed over the past 250 years.

The Flying Scot: Where Sailing Runs Deep

For nearly 70 years, Flying Scots have been built by hand in Garrett County. Along the way, the boat has become part of the fabric of summer at Deep Creek Lake. Earlier this summer, I went sailing for the first time.

I had seen sailboats on Deep Creek Lake plenty of times, but I had never really given much thought to what was happening out there. I didn’t know there were races nearly every weekend throughout the summer, or that people traveled from other states to compete here. I definitely didn’t know that there could be a couple hundred Flying Scots scattered around the lake.

I just knew I had never been sailing and wanted to try it.

So when I had the opportunity to go out with Greg and Cheryl in their Flying Scot, I did. And as a first-timer, I got to experience exactly what the boat was designed to do: we could simply go out for a sail in it, while the same boat could be out racing on Saturday without changing anything. A short time later, I found myself standing inside the Flying Scot factory right here in Deer Park, Maryland, looking at the other end of that story.

One Bowl at a Time

Garrett County’s first Empty Bowls event is a reminder that some of our neighbors are struggling with food insecurity.

A few days ago, I stopped by Deep Creek Pottery with a very simple assignment: pick a bowl.

The bowl I chose was to be painted, then fired in the kiln to become one of hundreds of handmade and hand-painted bowls gathered for Garrett County’s first Empty Bowls event, set for Sunday, September 20, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Wisp Resort.

The Empty Bowls began in the 1990s when a Michigan high school ceramics teacher and his students created bowls for a simple fundraising meal. Guests made a donation, ate soup and bread, and took their empty bowls home as a reminder that some community members were still hungry.

Looking through my camera roll, I realized I did a LOT this month.

I WENT SAILING.

After seeing Flying Scots on Deep Creek Lake for years, I actually got in one. And then I went to see where they’re made. RIGHT HERE. A tour of the Flying Scot factory made me appreciate those familiar sails on the lake a whole lot more.

Some summer nights are better with LIVE MUSIC. I caught the Little Yough Music Festival in Oakland.
